Is this product supposed to remain gritty when mixed with liquid?

Make sure when you mix that you are using warm bottled water. It is 2 tablespoons of water to 1 tablespoon of formula. It does have a gritty texture so make sure you mix it very well.

How long is the shelf life and how do you store it after opening?

If you buy the smaller quantity, it comes in a resealable plastic jar. The larger quantity come in a resealable plastic bag (heavy duty). I don't know about the shelf life because I use what I purchase for the kittens in foster care. I always have to reorder more!

How long is the formula good for after mixing? Can a large batch be made and refrigerated or frozen?

When I prepare a batch, I use hot water to mix it. I use what is needed and store the rest in an airtight container in the frig. It is only good for 24 hours. You will find that it may start to separate in storage. I just mix more hot water with it or some goat's milk. Baby kittens do well with goat's milk. I have never frozen it; use it all up every time.

What are the dark flecks in the ingredients?

I’m sorry, I purchase this as a donation to my cat rescue as they prefer it over KMR. I have no personal experience with the product.
