Drawing Realistic Pencil Portraits Step by Step: Basic Techniques for the Head and Face

I was really surprised by this book
I do love to draw and buying art books is a guilty pleasure. I have felt stuck in a rut for a while as I have struggled to achieve likenesses in my drawings so decided to take a punt on this book as I had seen Justin's work online and was struck by how well he captures a likeness. When the book arrived, my first impression was that it looked like any other art book and didn't appear to bring anything new to the table. That was a really unfair assessment.Firstly, the pictures are just beautiful and very inspirational.Secondly, when I took the time to read his guidance and have a go at it, I was surprised at how well my drawings turned out. OK, I'm not quite ready to exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery just yet but there was a really substantial leap forwards in my confidence and, if I may say so myself, the end result.I have too many art books which are gorgeous but have not moved me forwards enough (perhaps that's my fault) but this one has had a real effect. So pleased!

Very good book. I am no artist but my sketches have improved. Wish I had more skill but still nice to get tips which help.

I really liked this book. I'll buy more if he writes any
I loved the practice material in the book. Really good photographs and plenty of them. I'm trying to draw all the examples in his book. ( Halfway through number 2) using his method. The only criticism I have is his choice of background for his models.

Wonderful book.
Very well laid out. Easy to follow. Beautiful art that looks just like, and is very flattering to the models. Some colour with pastel pencils included. This is just how I want my portrait drawings to look like. No other book will ever be required!

Maas method is great
This is a great book that teaches what is called the maas method. It is a mix between grid and freehand and it is excellent. The only drawback is you have to draw the exact size of your reference. The method isnt perfect but it is good. I attached a portrait I did with the maas method. One of the pluses of this book is that is teaches how to draw facial features, accessories and hair. This is great for a beginner artist like me. I recommend this book.
