Beautiful illustrations
This book has beautiful illustrations and the text is written in poetic from that makes for an enjoyable reading experience. It does have a slightly religious theme but that is more due to the historical nature acknowledging that John Chapman was a missionary and carried a bible along with planting apple seeds. My 2 year old loves this book and its a gray way to introduce non-fiction.

Absolutely beautiful!
Don’t question it, just buy it! This has to be the most beautiful book I’ve ever purchased. The illustrations are gorgeous and there is so much detail I could look at them forever finding new things. The story/poem is also perfectly done. We homeschool so I used this as part of our curriculum for September/Johnny Appleseed/Apple theme. My kids loved it and requested it over the golden book Johnny Appleseed book I also bought. They both compliment each other well so I would recommend them both, but absolutely hands down this one for the illustrations. Also yes there is religious reference in this book but that’s part of Johnny Appleseed so I have no idea why people are complaining about it. It’s not pushing religious agenda, it states he carries a bible and that he doesn’t harm animals because they are Gods creatures, and the apple trees were Gods gift to earth and his plan. The little golden book has religious reference also. I don’t think it would be right to leave out a big part of who Johnny Appleseed was.

I’ll buy more of these
I like the poem which is actually in depth and tells the story, not just a silly rhyme. The artwork is great.

Johnny Appleseed by Reeve Lindbergh is one of my favorite children’s books
Johnny Appleseed by Reeve Lindbergh is one of my favorite children’s books. The poem tells the story of Johnny Appleseed in a delightful way, and this is a great introduction to poetry for children who tend to run away from it. The illustrations are excellent and complete the story itself. I have used this book many times in teaching fall unit studies, and the children always enjoy both the story and the colorful illustrations. The book also gives a brief account of John Chapman, who really lived and planted apple trees across America.I recommend this book to anyone who has children or who teaches them.

A lovely tale of pioneer times
Although Johnny Appleseed is known as a legend of the American frontier, I believe that his story nicely describes what pioneer times were like for children from Canada as well. I got this book to share with my children to show them something of how wild and untamed both Canada and the US were at the time the pioneers were spreading across the land. Imagine a land with no farms and no apple trees! The folk-art illustrations in the book are interesting to look at. The artist did a good job of showing how the pioneers of the early 1800s were working hard to carve homes for themselves out of the wilderness. At the end of the book the land looks much more "settled," in part due to the orchards of apple trees that John Chapman helped to plant. The short biography of the man at the end of the book is excellent--it tells only the facts about him (which are inspiring enough in themselves), leaving out all the tall tales that exist surrounding Johnny Appleseed. In all, a lovely and educational book to add to a home library. I especially recommend it for children interested in pioneer times.
