Hamilton Beach SmartToast Extra-Wide Slot Toaster (22444)

First thing to know. When I received I put toast in right away. Apparently not a good idea. It had a plastic chemical smell that was literally smoking. I immediately took the bread out and toasted on dark for about three times before it finally went away.Apart from that it looks nice, seems to be toasting well and is basically a cheap nice looking toaster. I am not a toast snob and unless toast suddenly becomes burned for no reason, I'm generally pretty easy going with a toaster as long as it works. This one seems to work... just have to get rid of that horrible burn off.***UPDATE 2013.04.24***/After using this for a while, I'm over the chemical/rubber burning smell and I'm bumping to four stars. It's a basic toaster, it toasts based on time and will make your toast crunchy. It looks nice and it's been working well. Originally I had at three stars but I think it deserves four and possibly five based on bang for the buck price. If you're looking for a simple cheap toaster, I've been happy with it.AS for the burn off, I toasted it empty three times and it seemed to have faded away by then. It hasn't returned.2015/10/22We purchased another. We moved and got rid of many things including this toaster. My wife purchased a cheap replacement which was horrible. The new one had no stinky burn off. It also doesn't toss the toast in an overly enthusiastic manner out of the toaster. The second one is absolutely perfect

I've used this 2-slice toaster daily, sometimes several times a day, for more than 2 weeks now. There was a pretty strong "new / hot plastic" smell the first few times it was used, but that has gone away, and It's been reliable and consistent.Although I haven't used the defrost function, I have sometimes used the "cancel" button when I decided I wanted my item a bit lighter than the dial was set for. The crumb tray is easy to remove & replace to empty, and instead of the hinged bottom plate we're all used to, you can actually take the fully removable tray over to the trash can to empty it! No more dumping crumbs all over the counter then wiping them up, spilling a few out of your hand onto the floor. The handle pushes down easily and smoothly. The sides stay cool. I set the dial for medium toast, and it comes out browned the same degree every time, regardless of the type (flavor / flour) of bread.The one tiny drawback is that it takes quite a while to toast - nearly 3 minutes on medium! My old toaster was much quicker, but I can adjust - still time for toast before your egg is done cooking. It's also several inches higher (about 3 or 4) than my previous toasters, I'm not sure why, but there is still plenty of room under the cupboards.I had been trying to get along with a family member's old toaster that was on its last legs, and then a new one that was a cheap grocery store promotion - the handle didn't stay locked down, so to get toast you had to stand there & hold it. Now, toast has again become something I don't have to think about. I recommend this toaster.

I bought this toaster because I was looking for a small, affordable product that is yet able to toast bagels. The Hamilton Beach toaster was the right choice and offers many perks:- besides the ability to toast bagels, toast and bread (not so good with english muffins) it also manages to defrost all of those- bagels are toasted on the cut-side and warmed at the round-side- thanks to the so called "toast boost" you can lift the slices and take them out easily- the crumb tray is easy to clean, but slides out from the back (front would be easier to access)- thanks to the shade selector you get your toast exactly as crispy as you want it- the exterior is not getting hot during toasting so you won't burn your handsDepending on where you want to place it in your kitchen you should be aware that the cord is pretty short: about 1.5 feet (45cm)The size of the toaster is: 12.5" x 7.9" x 9.3” (in cm this would be: 32 x 20 x 23.6)Overall I am very happy with this product and I think you get good value for money, especially when you like toasted bagels.

I bought this as a companion item for the Hamilton Beach coffee maker ( Hamilton Beach 49980A Single Serve Coffee Brewer and Full Pot Coffee Maker, 2-Way  that I also reviewed. The toaster looks really good next to its coffee maker brother. I was impressed with the defrost feature which works really well. It does exactly what it says it does, "defrosts" without toasting at all. The toaster is easy to clean due to the slide out crumb trays. Other toasters have a drop down "trap door" type crumb disposal system which leads to crumbs everywhere. The wide slots easy accommodate thicker slices as well as bagels. The bagel feature also works well if you just want to toast your bread on one side ( a habit we have in the UK). The toaster does not toast the bread evenly (hence the 4 star). This could be attributed to the spacing of the recessed heating elements. Excelente precio. El pan se puede tostar en varios niveles con claros grados de calor. Ranura ancha para todos tipos de pan. Me gusta también por robusto, lo que me hace esperar que dure más que otros que hemos tenido antes.

Solid toaster for the price. Been using it everyday for a month and it's held up well so far.

It is absolute crap, button is hard to stay down, then it never toasts the top of the bread. Really a piece of crap! Do not buy, I would return it if I could. Feels Cheap and is!
