thought it would be fun to compare charts from back then
gave as a gift to a neighbor who just left on a round the world sail on his boat with his wife. thought it would be fun to compare charts from back then. I glanced thru it and it looks like slow reading but informative and fun. I think it would be fun to have on a coffee table for people who do distance sailing and can chat about it over cocktails

Very nicely done. Historical detail descriptons and explanations, and reprints of original charts.A must for any mariner.

Cool
As someone who spent decades at sea looking at charts every day, this book has a special appeal. For those with merely a wish to go to sea, this provides some tantalizing eye candy.

Marvelus charts and history; text is a bit too credulous
The charts are gorgeous and explained well. What sticks in my craw is his credulous acceptance of the wisdom of old charts. No, Antarctica and Australia were not charted in amazing detail before Columbus. No, ancient Greek maps did not conform to styles "rediscovered" one or two thousand years later. It seems pretty easy to separate the incredulous nonsense from reality, and if in doubt, Wikipedia is as good a debunker as any. But it permeates too much of the text for my taste, and I started verifying lots of things that shouldn't need to be verified. This is for the first edition. I don't know what the second edition changed.Get it for the pictures and the general description. They really are amazing.

The Sea Chart by John Blake
Having read this book's review in the Forces Pensions Society magazine, I subsequently bought it for my son's birthday. He is a cartographer for the oil industry. He was absolutely delighted with it. It was a far better present than the sports car I bought him twenty years ago - it caught fire and burnt out the following day!.

Excellent
As the printed chart is giving way to electronic charts, this is a fascinating look at the history of charts with great illustrations
