An inspiring lesson of hope over desolation and despair
Monty Don is always surprising me. Despite being a very busy man, he has still found the time to be part of a drug rehabilitation project, trying to help a disparate group of people who have lost their way. They are in the grip of the most evil and pernicious trade which is so prevalent in our modern day society. Please read this book. It will challenge your pre conceived notions and allow you to see the harsh struggles that these people have to go through every day of their lives. He is unusual in that despite his hard won career on tv and writing, he has quietly been busy helping the most damaged and helpless. Unlike others in the horticultural world who court celebrity status, he does not, and remains true to himself, which in this celebrity driven world is a thing he and us should be very proud of.

Tell it as it is!
I'd been intending to read the book, ever since the BBC had screened the series. Well worth the wait! Monty Don doesn't pull any punches from start to finish, admitting his own frustrations when attempting to deal with bureaucracy and prejudice. As regards addicts, and the effects of taking drugs, this book is a real eye opener. Dated now of course, and hopefully attitudes will have become more enlightened? This book should be compulsory reading for older children and teenagers. It might make a difference! One can only hope.Is it significant that the TV series was never screened again?

compassionate and helpful
I really liked this book. Having gone through very many modes and angles of working at coping with a person in the grip of addiction I found it truthful and compassionate. But above all, in its honest approach and with all it's struggles I found it helped me to more fully understand, and cope with and live with, an addict in the family. Thank you Monty

fantastic and gripping
This book is raw in its brutal honesty of the story it tells. I became so emersed in the whole story that I was thinking about the group even when I wasn't reading. Great book. Rocky and Monty will there be a sequel? Read it and find out what happens at the rock
