How to Read Genesis (How to Read Series)

Helpful Introduction to a Complex Book
This is the third book in Longman's 'How to Read Series' that I have read and I enjoyed it a lot. I thoroughly appreciate the blend of thoroughness and conciseness of this series and have found it helpful to plow through these books before launching into a deeper study (as well as more in-depth commentaries). While Tremper Longman is a scholar, I find his writing style engaging and he has done a good job here of presenting just the right amount of introductory material, without going into so much detail that the average reader loses interest. This book is beneficial for anyone looking to get more out of their reading of Genesis, from the pastor who will preach through it to the individual who just wants to better understand the background issues of this foundational book of the Bible.

a perceptive and thorough analysis of the 1st book in the Bible.
a perceptive and thorough analysis of the 1st book in the Bible, which takes the book and separates it by basic themes of creation, history and genealogy of the nation of Israel and the patriarchs, and the culmination of the story of Joseph as forerunner to Jesus. Not an easy, but a very insightful, read. I am not saying this book is "gospel' if you are searching for that interpretation, but it DOES tie much of the "gospel" to the stories in Genesis, which many take as allegory or "just a story." Longman seems to show how Genesis is the key in many ways to understanding the story of Jesus and His world.

Excellent analysis of the book of Genesis
Found this to be a good and satisfying study of the book of Genesis, one that analyzed many of the more interesting (and challenging passages) of the book and brought a good degree of clarity and research. The writing was easy to follow and did a good job of addressing the main accounts of Genesis. I found it fascinating how Longman included analysis of other cultures and their traditions and compared these with Biblical accounts, to help bring a better understanding of certain passages and themes of Genesis.

I've read Genesis a countless number of times, but this gave me several new insights on the book I've never seen before. It's very readable. It's not overblown. Totally worth reading.

A Modern look at Genesis.
It was a reliable retelling of the Genesis stories with emphasis on chapters 1-11. The handling of the creation stories was especially helpful.

amazing yet simple book
If you want to get the big picture, the bigger idea of the book of Genesis this is the book. I advise this book as the first to read before a commentary. This book will be a map that will help you to have a better understanding latter when you read any commentary on Genesis.
