Fun nostalgic color immitation of Hal Roach's immortal "Our Gang" B&W shorts of the 1920s-early 40s.
Not just for small kids, as some suggest! These days, many spoiled kids and adults refuse to watch the B&W originals. Thus, here is a chance to see approximately what the originals were like, filmed in color. Mostly a boys gang, but 2 girls are included. Mary Ann, who quit the gang in 1931, is again characterized as a tom boy, so why she can be included in the gang. She's offended when Spanky categorizes her as "not a real girl"(i.e. a tom boy). He quickly corrects himself: "OK, OK, You're a real girl". Strangely, a Latino, who looks nothing like the original, was chosen to play her. Darla is characterized as a girly girl, with singing and dancing talent: a semi-member of the gang, and their sweetheart. She vacillates between Alfalfa and the gang's nemesis: Waldo, as her favorite boy. After dyeing her normally blond hair black, Eden Wood looks remarkably like the original Darla, in contrast to the actress in the '94 revivalist film. ........The actors playing Spanky, Alfalfa, and Porky looked reasonably like the originals. African Americans Stymie and Buckwheat are recognizable, Stymie with his Oliver Hardy-like derby hat, and Buckwheat with his afro-like long wild hair. The overall theme of the film is the kids trying to raise enough money to save grandma's bakery from being foreclosed, as she owes $10,000. in back mortgage payments. The alternative is to sell it to Waldo's rich father, to turn it into a modern mall, which grandma and the kids don't want. After they fail at being hired for various jobs, they decide they will have to establish their own money-making schemes, most of which are reenactments of skits from the original "Our Gang" shorts. They begin with pet washing and grooming, using an ingenious semi-automatic setup. When this eventually fails, they put together a sort of taxi, with mascot dog Petey, running on a treadmill, serving as the 'motor'. Next, Spanky organizes a wrestling match between tall Alfalfa and short Porky: the latter dressed in a Masked Marvel suit. It's assumed that Alfalfa will win. But, Waldo and his ally, Butch, the bully, tie up and gag Porky, substituting Butch in his place.(How could he fit in Porky's suit??). You can imagine the outcome! Finally, Spanky organizes a children's talent contest, held in a large theater, with outsiders included. Waldo again tries to sabotage the gang's act, promoting his own act with Darla, as the winner. But Darla abandons him to help the gang become the winners.

Fun family film.
My family and I loved the first film. I personally didn't enjoy this one as much, but then I generally don't with the modern films. My children enjoyed it though.
