Do you need to program this radio before you use?

No; however, Chirp is a free software available on the internet that can program a multitude of different kinds of radios if you purchase the program cable. Changing the PL tones to different values with the software can allow you to customize your walkies to avoid hearing others who may be operating on the channel. Very handy feature. Also please keep in mind FRS channels are no license required but they are low power (2 watts max). To use the higher 4 watt GMRS channels, you will need a GMRS license from the FCC. About $70 for 10 years and covers your entire family. FRS and GMRS rules are covered and explained in the FCC document titled “Part 95” which can be seen on the internet. Also much information is a available on MyGMRS dat cam.

do these have vox capability?

Yes, they have. It's disabled by default, you could follow the steps below to activate it:

1. Turn off the radio.
2. Turn the channel knob to 1~5 (for each level of VOX selected)
3. Hold the PTT and upper Side button together and turn on the radio.
4. Once you hear the voice prompt says "VOX ON", the VOX is activated.

Can you leave these Ansoko walkie talkies "on" all the time in the charging base?

Accepted Answer

You can leave them on all the time in the charging base, however; you will make the battery dependent on the charging base and it will run down faster outside of the base and eventually will have to be replaced.  I have found that it is best to have an extra base, battery, and antenna if you absolutely cannot be without the radio. I have bought over 12 of these to be used on a daily basis and in 3 years I have only had to replace one battery and one base. The rest are still going strong. If you fully charge them, you can use them throughout the week without putting them on the charging base. This is on true if you turn them off each day (an 8hr work day). I usually put them on the charging base on Fridays. Hope this helps.
