Product Description Two women fight for the future of their outback community After a decade of drought, a devastating sheep disease strikes the small Australian farming town of Paringa. Tough-minded veterinarian Kate McDonald (Golden Globe®-nominee Rachel Ward, The Thorn Birds) struggles to save her community with the help of a feisty new assistant (Victoria Thaine, The Caterpillar Wish) -- who is just as determined to unlock the mysteries of Kates past. Filmed entirely on location in a natural rain shadow region in the Adelaide Hills, this poignant drama features stunningly stark vistas and exceptional performances. Hostility and hope, determination and despair mix in a combustible series that pits two strong women against the odds and, oftentimes, against each other. DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE behind-the-scenes featurette, a Rachel Ward biography, and more. .com Think of Rain Shadow as All Creatures Great and Small, stripped of its leafy gentility. The gripping Australian miniseries follows the lives of two country veterinarians, but in this case they are two women (Rachel Ward and Victoria Thaine), living in the rugged bleakness of the Australian outback, their lives intertwined with the flinty farmers and ranchers they serve. Ward, who has been little seen on the screen as she has focused on directing and writing, makes a welcome return to acting as Dr. Kate McDonald--weatherworn, standoffish, perhaps hiding secret wounds surrounding the untimely death of her husband. Thaine plays Dr. Jill Blake, her new city-smart young assistant, the latest in a long line who have fled in succession, escaping the relentlessness of the harsh country--and their harsh employer. The viewer gets to learn about Kate, and the region around the fictional town of Paringa, through the eyes of Jill. Kate and Jill don't exactly spar, but they are both fearless and don't flinch in their confrontations. "You're all like the sun has baked all the life out of you," says Jill of the resident's regions. "Like prunes, then? Or roadkill?" deadpans Kate. "If you stay here, you'll end up like us." Jill is strangely drawn to the harsh countryside, and its peculiar inhabitants--and so, gradually, is the viewer. The plot revolves around a catastrophic sheep disease afflicting flocks in the region, and the perennial drought that is wearing down the stalwarts. But the true story is about the harsh landscape, full of ragged, dry beauty and completely unforgiving--and how it can break a person--or become the best haven on the planet. As Jill learns the rules of the outback, she also tries to probe into the real story of her boss. She, along with the viewer, becomes more fascinated by the harsh landscape, and the ways it changes the rules for animals and humans alike. The DVD contains a biography of Ward, and an absorbing documentary on the making of the show, which was shot entirely on location in a true rain shadow outside Adelaide, Australia. --A.T. Great to see cultures in other countries
Enjoyed the Western Australian landscape and seeing other cultures. It was compared to All Creatures Great and Small, but I see no comparison other than there are veterinarians as the major characters in the story line. Both series are fantastic and both are highly recommended...but in their own ways, different dynamics between the characters. Rain Shadow is about resilient characters with drive to find out the answer behind the answer in a small town culture that is very close knit. I wish there was a second and third season.

Exceellent Film
This is an excellent film about the people trying to live in a very dry region of Australia. I saw a preview on another Acorn video and knew I wanted to get the film. When it came it was better than expected. From what can I learn series 2 was never made. I wish it had been. Try to get it if you can. Some of these Acorn videos are only available used on the market place, which is a shame as many are very good.

Fantastic Mini-Series
I stumbled upon this series in late 2008 in the new releases section on Amazon. The two user reviews here convinced me that this would be a perfect birthday gift for a friend of mine - and it absolutely was. After she enjoyed the series, she let me borrow it.The actors are excellent as is the story. The 6 episode story arch is paced perfectly, each building on the prior installment. After watching one episode, I couldn't wait to watch more. My only regret was that I wanted the series to continue (it wraps up perfectly, while still leaving room for future installments).Since borrowing the set that I bought as a birthday gift, I have purchased my own copy of the set, and given yet another one as a Christmas present. I'm a bit surprised that this series hasn't gotten more attention - again, I stumbled on it by accident. The quality, in every respect, makes this set more like a six hour feature film than a television mini-series. It captures the beauty, lonelyness and isolation of life in a very accurate way that I think most people can relate to.I hope this gets aired on PBS at some point because this quality series deserves a much larger audience. I'd sure love to see another 6 episodes.

This is my all-time favorite mini-series. It's hard to believe the characters in the story are actors! They absolutely become and LIVE the people they portray. I've never been so "attached" to ALL the members of a cast. The portrayal of life in southern Australia as both magnificent and desperate is altogether convincing. The scenery is both beautiful and solemn. As an animal lover, the story has special significance to me. I watch "series one" at least once a year and always wonder why there is no "series 2,3,4 etc". I thought maybe Netflix just doesn't carry it, but I can't find it anywhere. I wonder what happened? If you really enjoy getting engrossed in a story and it's characters, be sure to watch this series!

A breath of deep, rich oxygenated air
I adore this show. Two strong women in a complicated environment dealing with problems that have no right or wrong solutions. The fact that they are living in a climate changed world only adds depth to the storyline and blurs the lines between what to wait for, hope for, and give up. Watching the younger woman learn from the older woman in a way that isn't mother-daughter, patronizing-victim or witch-princess is a breath of deep, rich, oxygenated air. Their relationship is textured and true. The actors/actresses are outstanding and bring the story to life in a remarkably memorable way.

Different but I throughly enjoyed
Personally I highly enjoyed Rain Shadow and have actually watched all the episodes twice. It is about a young female vet that goes out to a small remote town in Australia to serve an apprenticeship with a local, hard nose, female vet. The ranches in the area are on the dry side of the mountains (e.g. rain shadow) an experiencing a long term draught. While the entire series is slow paced, I found the DVD did an amazing job in developing the characters and depicting what a tremedous struggle it is for the local ranchers and their families. Not everyone will enjoy this series, but all I can say is I did. I think anyone that is interested in ranching, especially in arid areas, will enjoy Rain Shadow.

No subtitles
As this was set in Australia some of the accents are pretty thick and difficult to understand. I missed a lot of the dialogue because subtitles weren’t provided.

Not for everyone.
Three and a half stars. The two protagonists were outstanding. However, the casting was a tad ridiculous. The vet assistant looked like a teenager. Character development overall was excellent. However, the backdrop of severe drought and its ghastly implications, for both animals and humans, was rather depressing and at times downright haunting; it required some fast forwarding on my part. I hated the musical score; monotonal repetitive dissonant. It fit with the dusty unrelenting scenery. I am hoping that this is not a memorable film, for me!

Excellent series!!
I just bought this series and couldn't wait to watch it as I spent nearly two years living just outside Adelaide many years ago. This is an excellent series. I loved seeing the Adelaide hills and the scenery again. I don't mean the drought aspect though. This is a wonderful presentation of life in this area of South Australia, not glossed over. It is beautifully acted and presented. I was sorry it was only 6 episodes and I would have liked to see more. This shows the strength and dedication of everyone just to contend with daily life and its problems and triumphs. To see two lady vets is wonderful and well acted. The rest of the cast is very good also. I recommend this series.

a disappointment
I had looked forward to purchasing this story for awhile and generally, we found it to be quite interesting. However, without subtitles or closed captioning, the Aussie accent was far too difficult to try to understand. We managed to watch it once and were disappointed when we knew we had missed so much of the dialogue and therefore, the story as well. We also knew we couldn't possibly sit through it again. For that reason, I couldn't recommend this.

Aussie drama anytime
I enjoyed learning about the hardships that farming in Australia faces. I loved Rachel Ward in "A Town Called Alice" so wanted to view her in Rain Shadows and it was worth it. The British and Aussies do produce interesting drama. When is the rest of the series available?

It Never Rains But It ...
At the core this is a movie about the relationships people have with each other and with their pasts. Set in Austrailia in a region facing drought, hard questions are asked while hard lives are being lived. Brilliantly written, beautifully acted, these are characters you care about, people you are glad to have spent time with. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Series
I first rented this series from the Library and then just had to won it. For anyone who has travelled to Australia and loved it as much as I did; for anyone who enjoys violence-free, intelligent drama; for anyone who celebrates strong women characters in lead roles; this series is for you. The story revolves around two women vets - Rachel Ward is fabulous as 50 year old Kate, and Vitoria Thanke wonderful as her young assistant, Jill. We see the dynamic of two women learning to trust each other set against a backdrop of a drough-ridden, disease infested Australian rural community. I loved this series and can only hope for another more episodes will be produced.... By the way the male characters are pure Aussie and deligtful.
