This is a classic piece of literature. Exuberant and truly unique in his narrative voice and style, Fante captures the gritty underbelly beauty of Depression era Los Angeles in a way that no one else could. This is one of the few books that I re-read, and it’s always worth it as it makes my heart soar and dip with the ups and downs of the narrative, as well as the relentless flow of Fante’s wordsmithing and craftsmanship. Especially if you love old LA, this is a must read.
