The Great War in a Great Book With a Great Viewer and OK Views
Jean-Pierre Verney's "The Great War in 3D" is comprised of three parts: the book, a stereoscope, and 35 reproductions of vintage World War One stereoviews. The book is fascinating, with each chapter covering a year of the war and each introduced by a newspaper format summary of events from that year around the world to provide some historical perspective. The text is rich in personal accounts of the war as seen in letters and notes by soldiers and other witnesses - a sort of print version of a documentary by Ken Burns. Many of the photos used in the book have apparently not been published before, which helps makes this a fascinating work. Strangely, the book makes no reference to the accompanying stereoview reproductions, which are presented with no identification of their publishers or the numbers of the views within published sets. The original titles of the views are presented (or approximated) on the backs of the small cards, but these serve only to perpetuate many errors by the original publishers in misidentifying the images or claiming posed scenes as actual war action scenes (a common problem with WW1 stereoviews). In a more extreme case, four views of Russian troops actually date from the 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War! One action view of American soldiers is printed with the left and right images reversed, producing a pseudoscopic effect. The metal folding viewer provided with the set is of impressive quality, ironically based precisely on the design of a WW2 era German viewer from the Raumbild book sets. The viewer alone is worth the price of the whole set, as is the book, and the views (while poorly identified) are generally reasonable reproductions. (See also the illustrated review by Ralph Reiley in the Jan/Feb 2014 issue of Stereo World magazine.)

stereoviews
This book contains stereo views taken during WWI and contains a simple metal viewer for them. The photos are nothing spectacular (I would have been surprised if they were, given the limits of such photography) but they give you a "feel" for the war that few other media can. This was war in the trenches, the use of tanks, various armies... a lot of material, although it doesn't include all the fronts. The book is OK as an introduction to the war.I especially like the stereoscopic viewer, which although it needs a few slight "adjustments" to get into focus. It is well-made, unlike some plastic ones that are out there. The stereoview cards are smaller than the older ones, though.

Enjoyable way to look at history
The viewer and pictures are great. It gives an interesting perspective on WWI and also on the media used from that era.The included book provides a good overview of the war as well. Although it's not an exhaustive history by any means (nor is it intended to be so) it adds a unique personal perspective from the people involved in the war. It provides great additional pictures from the war. It also has a series of anecdotal reflections, segments of participant's diaries and other writings from that period. Overall a great package for anyone interested in that war era or the media from that period.

Interesting
If you like 3D without the colored glasses, this is a nice product, but possibly they could have included more and varied photos since thousands are available. The book is nothing special, but something your child might be able to use for school. Instead of a book with a short history, they should have included a large number of stereo sets on the pages of the book.

Great product!
This is a great way to learn about the war. These are pretty intense photos and seeing them in 3d really makes the terror of war real. The viewer is easy to use and if you Google stereoscopic photos you can use the viewer to look at all kinds of 3d photos on your phone or computer! It also comes with a nice book telling about the great war.

Pictures OK, WWI book very good.
The stereoscope pictures were so-so but the book that came with it was well written with great pictures. The Great War was nothing but The Great Tragedy.

WWI COMES TO LIFE
I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my son but couldn't resist having a peek myself. The stereopticon slides are incredible ... they also work in my antique viewers. A must to bring the realities of War to life.

Welcome addition to 3D library
This is a very well-packaged general history of WW1 based on a French Book "La Guerre de 1914-18 en relief. The English "version" contains only small parts of the larger French original and much that is new and very welcome it is. The book contains rare autochromes and much new info on the US and British side of the war. Obviously the 3D photos are the big attraction, though, and I am pleased to say there are no repeats from the French edition. Shots include the Russian front, aviation and naval views as well as the Western Front. The scissor stereoscope is very user-friendly and will handle original WW2 German raumbild 3D cards, too!Considering the silly prices often now asked for original WW1 stereographs this edition is marvellous value for money and highly recommended. Could the authors and publishers consider publishing further packs of 3D images?

Top Marks to Seller
I ordered this yesterday evening for a friend who is a nut on world war one, it is now 09:55hrs and the item has already arrived! Although I have not opened it (being a gift) I can at least comment on the presentation. The box itself is really sturdy like a hard backed book cover, not a flimsy card package. The whole thing has been sealed in cellophane ans it's actually a lot heavier than expected. The thing shouts quality and I am really pleased at how quickly the seller went to the trouble of getting this lovely product to me on a Saturday morning, I wish all sellers were this prompt and professional. Many, many Thanks!!!

A tragic time viewed in 3D
This set provided me with an intriguing three-dimensional look at a tragic time in modern history. All of the pictures were darkly informative of the grim reality of life in wartime, made all the more poignant by the immediacy afforded by 3D stereoscopic views. The set was obviously made to sell at a much higher price than I paid, and hence represents terrific value. It came well boxed and included a book plus a folding viewer which can be used with other standard size stereo pairs, not just the ones supplied.

Steroscopic viewer and book
This was a present for Christmas for me. I love it, having a keen interest in WW1 the cards that go in the viewer are so good. You feel you can almost touch the men in the picture, they really come to life. The price is so good. Highly recomend this.

Excellent starter pack
Package arrived very promptly. The box and the book are of very good quality. The viewer is metal, very simple to use, and easily adjustable so that even I can see the cards clearly with my poor eyesight, unlike some of the "posh", expensive viewers. I found the cards easy to see, although some did need more adjustment than others, and the 3D effect was absolutely amazing. I would recommend this to anyone as a very good starter pack.
