Great lantern that uses regular AA batteries
I know 18650 batteries are all the rage these days, but for my hurricane kit, I still prefer lighting which uses regular/standard alkaline battery sizes. I like knowing that each battery is good for x hours of lighting from this light. I can then see my battery supply and know exactly how many hours total I have to work with and can budget accordingly. After a hurricane, or going into a recovery area, you never know when the next time you'll be able to find someplace to charge things up, so it's imperative that you can fend for yourself. Also useful is the 360 degree / 180 degree selectable output on this lantern. Many times I have it sitting against a wall or in a corner and don't need to waste putting light out to the back of it.Not quite as useful (for me) is the downlight, which is a shame. I really like lanterns which have low-lumen settings so I can use them as marker lights or nightlights. This lantern has a 2 lumen setting, but it's only on the downlight. The downlight's useless if you have the lantern sitting on a table. It is nice and useful if you can find a place to hang it from 'though.Overall, great lantern. It could be a little less expensive, but you get what you pay for. I don't worry about this lantern breaking or not working when I need it to.

Great little AA lantern
I got this lantern for camping after doing lots of research and I’m very pleased. I was considering other lanterns that took multiple D batteries but they’re just too big and heavy for camping trips. Bring some spare AA batteries If you’re worried about runtime. Easier than dealing with recharging when you’re away from home. AA lithium batteries are little beasts and worth the extra cost.Even on low lantern was bright enough to light up a picnic table area at night. I didn’t have a need for medium or high but they’re plenty bright. The light is neutral white but I wouldn’t mind a warmer color. It starts on low when you first turn it on which is nice. A lot of others cycle from high to low which makes no sense to me. The down light was perfect for hanging in the tent. The low was dim enough to not bother a sleeping girlfriend, and the red is even dimmer. I especially like that it remembers the most recent mode used, so I didn’t have to worry about getting blinded in the tent. The little clip wasn’t the best, so I replaced it with a small carabiner for hanging.

Love it.
I have had a Black Diamond pocket lantern for 12 years. I gave it away after using this one weekend. This is perfect size and light output for a tent. The only negative, you cannot turn on the down light and broadcast light at the same time like my Black diamond. I still like this one better. One side note. The battery fit is tight. My Amazon Basics rechargeable batteries did not fit but my eneloops did.

perfect tent lantern
Very useful lantern--perfect for tent or small table light. Red light function is good. Economical. Good tripod mount, good hanging loop, lots of lighting options from bright to low, top and bottom, white and red.

Great light for camping, hiking and emergencies.
This is a great little portable light. It really is quite small even when compared to similar AA lights.Good light levels and battery life, and the best feature for emergencies is the ability to run on only 1 AA battery if needed.

Extra batteries
The product is fine. Cute little light that is pretty bright. It was supposed to come with 3 AA batteries. They all came with 6 batteries each, 3 in the outer package and 3 really cheap ones inside thevpackahe with the light.

poor quality
Bought this item and came up with poor quality batteries and have only used less then 5 min. When I am ready to use the battery ran out and I can’t even change the battery. it stuck inside, and can’t do anything with it.

Worth it.
The reasons this is $40 are the quality and feature set.#1 In a major storm, power can be out for days or weeks. The lowest setting on this will last 300 hours. Granted, you won't want to perform brain surgery with that amount of light, but it's more than enough to get around by. You probably could read a book if you had too, but think more like an important note, or an instruction manual.#2 It's smaller than a regular 12oz can, and weighs about half as much with the batteries in (7 oz or so).#3 If you need more light, or in a different direction there's 5 modes to choose from.#3a There's 2 additional Red light modes, if you were in a situation where being seen was more important than seeing.#4 It uses regular old school AA batteries, and as a bonus, they all go the same way (positive up) so you could do a change in the dark if you had to.It has some other incidental features like it's water "resistant", it has the little hanger thing built in, it has a tripod mount if you happen to have a tripod handy, (it's the same screw attachment as a camera) and it also has a flat top so you can flip it over if the hanger doesn't work for your situation.Having only 1 button makes it both more simple and complex. You hold it for a second to turn it on and off, and use quicker clicks to cycle through the 5 white modes. Then to switch from White to red (and back again) you do a super quick double click. I was able to figure it out without the instructions. It also remembers where you turned it off, and will come back on in the same mode, so you don't need to click it a bunch of times every time you use it.In my mind, this is way more about emergency lighting than it is camping. Small, lightweight, adaptable. I suppose, for a hard core backpacker, where every ounce counts, this would probably do.
