Road trip, self discovery, myth weaving
There are really no movies in which the leading man, men, ladies are Native American, so this movie offers a different perspective and a change of pace so to speak, at least for most areas of the country where mainstream coastal cities for example interact very little with Native Americans. I appreciated it for this reason.

Unfortunately One of a Kind
My dear late mentor, who was an elder of the Skagit tribe in Washington state, said that Smoke Signals was "the only movie (she) ever saw about Indians that wasn't about white people." That's about it. In certain indefinable ways Smoke Signals feels a bit dated, and it isn't as complex or subtle as Sherman Alexie's book of short stories "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven", but unfortunately there isn't anything else like it.

They could be us!
There's something that I can't fully comprehend. In 1998, in a different country, we had to hitch-hike throw Northern parts of Russia with no money (but we were not heading for the funeral, but other important event). We had this a-bit-mongolian look and long hair, we told our stories to pay for a ride, we wore almost the same clothes like those boys wear in the movie...Poverty, secrets, drinking, crazy talks with the strangers - it all looks almost the same. Not a crazy coincidence. A generation mark.A thousand times 5-star movie.

reality bites
Bought this DVD after watching Rich Hall's documentary on the portrayal of Native Americans in film and TV as it was recommended to be more authentic than many of the mega bucks Hollywood productions. I wasn't disappointed. It has a gentle quality to it, but doesn't gloss over the reality of reservation life and the disapirty between the Native culture and modern day America. I particularly liked the two main characters with their stoicism and dry humour. Well worth watching.

Very well acted and it was good to watch something different
This film is certainly not an epic or a classic, but an interesting story involving friendship and family relationships. Very well acted and it was good to watch something different. I love Adam Beech anyway!

Smoke Signals
This is a great movie, it really captures the true lifestlye and trials of Native American youth today. this film is full of heart and wisdom. It also has great depth and a very subtle lesson in Native American spirituality. I only wish they had it in this region!
