i have a 2011 mbp with a thunderbolt1 port. im wondering should i buy the thunderbolt 2 dock or the prior one... any recommendation?

You should definitely buy the Thunderbolt 2 Dock. With improved performance you can't go wrong. I have a Thunderbolt 1 port on my MBP and it works perfectly.

Can the two Thunderbolt ports drive two Apple Thunderbolt Displays with a 2014 Retina MacBook Pro?

No. You can use the HDMI port or you can use the thunderbolt as a minidisplay port, but it won't do both at the same time.

Is it possible to run 2 dvi-to-thunderbolt connected monitors through this dock?

No. You can only run one monitor off the dock. If you want two monitors one of them would need to be connected to your Mac's HDMI out port.

Can you run a SuperDrive via the Elgato dock, or do you still need to plug it directly into a USB port of the computer?

I have my superdrive plugged into the Elgato dock USB slot and it works fine.
