The Druids

Eh....
I was expecting THE answer to the question of the historical Druids, only to realize that I now have more questions. In fact, Ross Nichols, along with all the romantics that Ellis tries to shoot down, aren't saying much different from what Ellis speculates. Ellis uses the Romantics' fantasies to help shed light on who the Druid's may have been. I suggest buying and reading books by Ross Nichols and Michael John Greer.

Thought provoking
Great read, but a little to much non-essential filler. Too many suppositions and tangents for my taste. Still very interesting, but I would suggest it more for someone who has already sought a more in-depth knowledge of the Celts and has a greater understanding. Ellis points out a lot of things I hadn't known, especially the relationship between Christianity and Druidism. Very interesting.

Great book.
The author appears somewhat biased and confused at times, but very valuable resource.

... more about the Druids and what they were really like, look no further
If you want to know more about the Druids and what they were really like, look no further. Mr. Ellis establishes himself as an authority, and his clear demonstration of knowledge taught me a lot that is missed in pop culture. If you want serious and thorough information about who the Druids were and what they stood for, here is the book for you.

food for thought
Ellis's writing style can be a bit frustrating for the pagan reader, but as a student of history I found this book most enjoyable. The author's theories about the similarities between Celtic and Indian culture are, if nothing else, intriguing. I feel that the material was presented in the manner intended: as a sampling of the evidence that will hopefully inspire others to do the research for themselves. As a Celtic reconstructionist pagan, I personally share his views on "new agers" claiming to follow a Celtic path. A triumphant book that delivers us from the New Age dregs of revisionist religion to at least a plausible level of ancient custom.

An essential book for Druid practice
This was represented to me as a must read when I began serious exploration of the Druid spiritual path. It is not a fast or easy read but it gives you a deep and thorough look at the history and development of Druidry as a religion or at least a spiritual paradigm from ancient days to modern times. It is a keeper for me and a must-have for anyone seriously exploring Druidry and related spiritual paths.

The Real Deal
Excellent!!! This is by far the most accessible book on Druid protoculture that Ive found. Only missing one star because it's devoid of photographs of archeological evidence. Thank you Mr. Ellis!!!

Well Cross Referenced. Well Researched. No Fairyland Modernism
Dr P Beresford Ellis is renouned for his detailed research into Celtic History, and as such is usually most inciteful into the truth behind many myths and missunderstandings of thier ancient culture. Forget your Fairytale understanding of things Druidic, here's the truth, albeit ocasionally somewhat biased towards the Celts, but after all, what did the Romans ever do for us anyway!?As always, well researched, well cross referenced, and he seems to have access and understanding of material which other Historians have often failed to research in sufficient depth.Thoroughly recommended. Also read 'The Celts' by the same Author.
