STROKE: The Road to Recovery: A Guide for Survivors & Families

I recommend this helpful book.
This was a very helpful book in helping me understand my 90-year-ols buddy's stroke. She could have written it, because her experience was so similar to the author's. She would have also made the same wisecracks about some of the less pleasant aspects of suddenly finding one's independence gone. It was good to learn that my friend's disabilities were nothing out of the ordinary - she is in the normal range, as well as ways to adjust and modify for them. The section that is told from the spouse's point of view held less value, as my friend is a widow, but it may prove useful for others. It is an easy and relatively quick read. I read it in spurts, while my visiting my friend and she was sleeping. I recommend the book.

A deeply practical, empathetic and moving account of one of life's most difficult experiences.
"Stroke: The Road to Recovery" chronicles the odyssey of a survivor of a serious stroke, in his own words. While considerable practical advice emerges from this thoroughly personal account, perhaps most important is the empathy it offers. The stroke survivor feels understood, supported - and validated for so often feeling annoyed at all the new indignities life now serves up. But Doug Prillaman's memoir also inspires you to be a SURVIVOR, and encourages you to find even ingenious ways to navigate countless fresh challenges your disability now poses. I strongly recommend this book, to stroke survivors, caregivers, and friends and family members who long to be supportive.

This was the most helpful resource I have found after my husband had an ischemic stroke similar to the one described. Our journey has been so similar. I appreciated the inclusion of the caregivers thoughts thoughts. I've read parts of this book several times. I'm grateful they shared their story.

Thanks.
Stroke was insightful and offered me a new understanding of the many aspects of stroke. Enjoyable to read. The medical information is presented in such a way that I found it easy to comprehend. Wish I had understood stroke better when my grandmother was alive and had suffered many strokes. Thought about her a lot as I read the book. Thanks Tom and Dr. Prillaman.
