Bernstein and his different orchestras all are simpatico. i have heard about a third of this set so far and not once did i feel let down. i do wish whoever kept coughing during a live rachmanioff performance and left his spot where ever those microphones were. just saying. when i listened to the four seasons by vivaldi i thought it just might be the best version i have heard so far. i do like vivaldi in this or other HIP music. but the one here is wonderful. i look forward to the disc with dave brubeck on it. that one piques my interest. overall this box set and the price it can be had is just too good to pass up people. this is a great collection

Excellent 1960s/70s Bernstein Columbia recordings live again!
I recently ordered Sony's Leonard Bernstein Album collection, and it arrived in just several days to Michigan from Z Overstocks in the UK! The shipping was prompt, and the 80 CDs in the set were in great condition and perfect order; absolutely no complaints about the quality or shipping of this CD mega set! I will have a great time in the coming weeks with this musical encyclopedia, a real feast of listening pleasure. I have so far listened to the CDs of Bernstein's "West Side Story" Symphonic suite, "Candide" Overture, "On the Waterfront" and "Fancy Free", and find them to be excellent early 1960s stereo, with alot of bass and "Punch" where needed. Bernstein's "Prelude, Fugue and Riffs", with soloist Benny Goodman, and "On the Town" are also excellent. I also checked CD 80, "Great Marches", and liked the Sousa items, Rule Brittania, Le Marsellaise, Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Star Spangled banner. I had read a review of this in it's "Bernstein Century" release of ca. 1998, and did not find the bass (Booming bass was their complaint) a problem. Some of Lenny's tempos seem a bit spritely for Sousa marches, but they work, and the end result is enjoyable. I know many of the recordings herein from individual releases, and believe the Falla CD will be terrific, for example. This is one of the best value/dollar deals in the Classical music world right now. Consider it an investment, and GO FOR IT.

Two things to make clear at the outset: I am very pro-Bernstein's recordings; I have not yet listened to anywhere near all of the performances in this box. I have no hesitation, however, in hailing this as both a treasure trove and a tremendous bargain: 80 CDs for under £100! Sony are clearly making everything LB recorded (mainly) with the NYPO for CBS between 1951 and 1976 available on CD; we had the Symphony box before, and this new one has all his other Concerto and orchestral recordings ... except it would appear that a 3rd Vocal/Operatic box is planned, because vocal pieces are missing here. Some get through, such as the fabulous and criminally neglected performance of Falla's El Amour Brujo with Marilyn Horne, but you don't get the thrilling rendition of Beethoven's quirky Choral fantasy with Rudolf Serkin, nor, much to my annoyance, Brunhilde's Immolation with Eileen Farrell on the second Wagner disc. Who should buy this set? Bernstein completists yes, even more so than the previous Symphony Collection, but also any real music lover, who wants to sample a huge range of music from the Baroque through light classical favourites to mid/late 20th century stuff in vital, wholly committed, exciting and warm performances, thrillingly and characterfully, if not always immaculately, played. This is vintage Bernstein in every sense, before the duration of his interpretations expanded with his waist line. If you want smooth music making in the highest of hifi, then steer clear, but if you love recordings that communicate excitement andna genuine feeling for the music, then you shouldn't hesitate. Some of the music will be new to most listeners, whilst elsewhere you'll encounter pieces you may not have heard for years, and then there are renditions of core repertoire that will have you listening afresh. Indeed, some are on CD in the UK for the first time eg. Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Stern: slightly slower than usual, but compelling stuff. Younger listeners will probably be staggered by the breadth of LB's repertoire, and the fact that we have 80 CDs with not a single note of Mahler! Even older collectors may be surprised too, because CBS/Sony often reissued a relatively narrow range of his recordings; there's stuff here that you wouldn't even find in the Royal Edition or Bernstein Century series. It's great having all the Beethoven Piano Concerti available together, and now you can here how Bernstein responds differently to Gould and Serkin in two versions of my favourite 3rd concerto. Similarly, I loved the opportunity to hear LB and Stern in Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto: it may be nearly 60 years old, but what a performance! If that was a discovery for me, elsewhere I can think of other listeners discovering classic, but now overlooked accounts that I've loved for years, such as the partnership with Entremont in Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto. You could then compare it with his later version with Andre Watts, although I would suggest that partnership has more to offer in Brahms 2 and Liszt 1. And if Berlioz's Harold in Italy means Colin Davis to you, wait until you hear it in a performance that grabs Byron's hero by the testicles and does not let go until the final orgy is well and truly over! I could go on, but better just content myself with a few practicalities. This set comes in an LP sized box that, for those of you old enough to visualise this, takes up roughly the space that a vinyl set of Wagner's Ring would do: ingenious, if sometimes a little fiddly. The CDs come in their own cardboard sleeves, with some cracking old photos, track listings and timings, and details of performers and recording dates and venues. No notes of course, but the booklet does contain an essay by David Gutman: interesting, but brief and a lot of it would be familiar to those who know his contributions to Gramophone. The background stuff could have been better, but then the set would have been pricier. What matters here is the music ... and the performances.

Buon ascolto a tutte e tutti voi....
