The Road to Mecca: A Drama in Two Acts
T**T
Compelling story with complex characters. A play to treat with utmost care.
i am considering auditioning for an upcoming production of "The Road to Mecca". The story is very compelling, and speaks to aging, marriage, loneliness, friendship, creativity, self-confidence, love, and trust. The characters definitely are complex, and to do the script justice, a production team needs to really dig beneath the skin of the play to get a sense of who these characters are. The plot serves as a vehicle to reveal the characters, which seems to be the real story Mr. Fugard is telling. It would be a mistake to think that the charactersʻ motivations are simple. At the end of it all, it is a beautiful story. Not sure if it will work with ethnic-blind casting, as the script had specific ethnic references. I suppose, it really is up to the director and actors to tell this story in such away that transcends actorsʻ ethnicity, but it may be a consideration. Age is definitely a casting consideration.
