How wide is the center U section? Would like to use this for pushing cordless shades all the way up without having to climb over a big bathtub. Thanks

The main U section is about an inch and a half wide- this should work well for your situation. I use it for many instances- It helped a lot with watering my hanging plants in the summer - That way I didn’t have to grab a stepstool to water them. I could just bring them down and water them all at once😊

Is the tip, ie the hook, metal?

Apparently the hook I received is different than the picture of yours. Mine has different a hook On each end. They appear to be metal covered in plastic. There was only one pole. It is one of the best gadgets ever.

Would this work for cleaning out an outdoor birdhouse?

I use to reach things high in my closet Not sure how you would be cleaning a birdhouse unless you put something on end of it
