Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade [Blu-ray]

The best of the franchise.
When Prof. Henry "Indiana" Jones (Harrison Ford) learns that his father, Henry Jones, Sr. (Sean Connery), has gone missing, he and fellow colleague Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) set off on a globe-trotting trek to find him and to finish the work he started: the search for the Holy Grail. Along the way, Prof. Jones discovers that the Nazis have also learned of the Grail and are racing to find it first. With a stellar cast, including John Rhys-Davies and Allison Doody, it's the epic adventure of a lifetime for the world's most priceless artifact and the meaning of family. While most fans claim "Raiders of the Lost Ark" as their favorite, this has always been at the top of my list. The writing is solid and the inter-character relationships are top-notch. The filming locales are stunning, up to and including one of the Seven Wonders of the World in Jordan. John Williams' music, as always, provides the best backdrop for adventure, drama, and mystery. There are very few serious plot holes or inconsistencies; the fight scene towards the end looks rather obviously staged. But, any of these are easily overlooked or forgiven, as the broader story is told more than well enough. While the picture and sound are fantastic, this blu-ray standalone does not have much by way of special features; those are all in the collector's box set. All in all, this gets a hearty recommendation and is a worthwhile addition to any movie buff's library.

Better than I remembered
I still think this is the weakest of the original 3 Indy movies. However, it isn't as bad as I remembered. I skipped school when this came out to go see it opening day and I remember being underwhelmed. Not sure if I've even watched it again until last night. The prologue actually wasn't terrible, River Phoenix did a good job although it is kind of silly most of Indy's trademarks (fear of snakes, use of whips, his hat) all stem from one childhood event. I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed the first 1/3 of the movie, until Dr. Jones Sr. shows up. It wasn't Sean Connery's fault, he was very good, it was just too much of a comic tonal shift. In Raiders you have Sallah as the comic sidekick. In Crusade you have Sallah, plus Indy's dad, plus Brody. It was too much. Still a good movie, just not the best Indy movie.

Not as good as Raiders of the Lost Ark but thank god ...
I just spent far too much time reading hundreds of these reviews. Some of the "bad" reviews are a bit surprising.I remember seeing THE LAST CRUSADE in 1989 working as a young college student part time in a Cleveland Heights movie theater. The "Indiana" movie remained at theater for months as other (movies) came and went (only 2 screens). The consensus was: Not as good as Raiders of the Lost Ark but thank god it was better than The Temple of Doom. The easy majority seemed to like Indy was battling the "evil" Nazis (cartoon cliche) again and no longer had to deal with the just plain silly, haha gross-out, eating eyes and bugs at the dinner party has nothing to do with story scene (in Temple of Doom), for example, while welcoming the mystical, magical, biblical chase to find "The ArK" in one and "The Grail" in the other.Anyways, (I don’t wish to denigrate Temple of Doom anymore … it’s not bad) I purchased INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE because it was funny with addition of Connery as dad (and Not a James Bond Type character). Also, the Young Indy intro (with River Phoenix) is great with snakes explanation. The blond Austrian femme fatale to be (sort of) is very (Aryan) attractive. Greed and power and Eternal Life are prevailing themes. Just about every crowd that I can recall (back in theater in 1989) loved the "guardians" line "He chose ... pooorly". Laughs aplentyThe LAST CRUSADE had a great, fun supernatural ending (yeah, Denholm Eliot's character got a bit too oafish, even almost falls off horse at end, haha ... but Kate Capshaw was almost annoyingly worse in "The Doom" ... a thankless role in hindsight...?).Extra interviews with some cast (not Ford) are ok as is the "Enemies of Indy" which is a little better than ok.10 bucks? Seems like a simple choice to watch INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, again. My Widescreen version is easy on the eyes and the sound IS LOUD during action and not too low for the dialogue.2008 Lucasfilm Ltd Dvd is an easy 4 stars (with those xtras).

Still as entertaining as ever to watch
I have always enjoyed the Indiana Jones series. I think they are Harrisons Ford's best work and fit him like they were made just for him. I enjoyed this movie which stars Sean Connery as Indiana's "Dad" . Of course a lot of adventure excitement and amazing feats of are you kidding who could do this but Indiana Jones and you start believing it without question as you get further and further into the movie. OH and something else typically unheard of in todays movies....PG rated and i don't thing there's even a hell or a damn in the entire movie SOOO that means the movie (actually the entire Indiana Jones series) is great for the whole family to watch. Highly recommend the movie

Great show and the Acting was terrific including Sean Connery ...
It came ahead of time and is phenomenal in Blu-Ray (only way to see it)! Great show and the Acting was terrific including Sean Connery & River Phoenix and Alison Doody. Well written-the best of the Indiana Jones Series. Lots of Great Stunts done with excellent Stunt Men. Petra (located in Jordon) is an incredible Carved Ancient Miracle accomplished over 2000 years ago. How did these Ancient people accomplish this? (As spectacular as the Pyramids) at the end of the Show; it showed the REAL Petra on location in Jordon. The inside was accomplished by great set-designing and, of course, a Steven Spielberg Movie is going to be spectacular. You can see an entire Documentary on Petra by going to Netflix. The rats in the picture were REAL and it took courage for Harrison Ford and Alison Doody to move through them, though they were overwhelming in numbers! Whoever played Hitler looked so much like him, I thought it looked just like him. Buy the Movie in Blu-Ray.
