... but the sound was not what I had expected. So my learning is next time I must hear/feel/see the drum before buying it.

I look at it and I see ART, pure and simple, Made from the Heart, it is lovely. The Sound is not important, you are western and not used to other cultures ideas of what music is. Classic Japanese, Chinese, etc… Who are we to say it is not ‘good’, grow up, understand their culture is hundreds if not thousands of years older than ours. We have much to learn, and many growing pains to suffer. Besides, it is probably sprayed on through a template, so what? It is beautiful, nonetheless. I leave out 5th star for sound quality, I have not heard it. LOL.
