Review "David Nobbs is the funniest writer in Britain ... Nobbs' brilliance in contrasting plots, reflexive storylines and the most concise prose style since Raymond Carver makes these three books read like exercises in total comic brilliance" Word Synopsis "The Complete Pratt" compiles the first three volumes of the misadventures of Henry Pratt, beginning with a brilliantly funny evocation of a Yorkshire boyhood in "Second from Last in the Sack Race"; Henry's first job is as a cub reporter on the Thurmarsh Evening Argus, told in "Pratt of the Argus", hailed by Sue Townsend as 'very funny'. Finally, in "The Cucumber Man", Henry decides to take on a new role and a new challenge - working for the Cucumber Marketing Board in Leeds. Stumbling through the fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties, Henry accumulates marriages and children along the way and "The Complete Pratt" is a touching and hilarious ride through a divided Britain... Three terrific reads. Not to be missed.
A superb trio of books. And each, in its own way, a reflection of a stage in life that is so easily forgotten . . . and wonderfully recalled here. The writing is seeringly honest - few if any punches are pulled - and if readers don't recall horrendous and marvellous events in their own lives then indeed they must have led sheltered ones. There are laughs, guffaws, wit, nostalgia, and above all else, wisdom. Don't miss out. Read before life leaves you behind.

Sheer Delight.....
Clever, wise, fantastically funny and touching - all in equal measure - sheer delight. Covering the first three volumes in the Henry Pratt chronicles, a read not to be missed. Highly recommended.

Funny & touching.
Originally read the first book "second from last in the sack race" when I was a lot younger. Really enjoyed revisiting it and the following two books in the series followed on with David Nobbs humour and writing.

witty and wise
Though not as laugh out loud funny as his contemporary Peter Tinniswood [who wrote a similar, though more surreal comic northern trilogy +1] I found the Henry Pratt books whimsical, perceptive and and very readable. I initially never intended to read the three novels in this book back to back, but became so intrigued with the life story of the eponymous hero that I had to forge ahead.

Make yourself a Pratt
I promise you that if you have the audacity to take this book sand read in public, you will not be able to refrain from laughing out loud. A nd cringingly collapse into into paroxysms of mirth. You have been warned.

So good I bought it twice!!
When I moved house and downsized I reluctantly had to dispose of a number of well loved books. So I bowed to the inevitable and bought a Kindle. Being in need of a cheer up read this was the first book, or should I say 3 books that went onto the Kindle.
