ROG Strix Z390-F Gaming Motherboard LGA1151 (Intel 8th and 9th Gen) ATX DDR4 DP HDMI M.2 USB 3.1 Gen2 Gigabit LAN

This is a great motherboard if you are going for a 9th Generation Intel build. I have this paired with an i7-9700K. I ran a few benchmarks with freely available software where you can compare performance with similar builds online. My system has shown higher benchmarks than some configurations with the same processor using different brand motherboards. Benchmarks also show higher single core performance than the i9-9900K using different brands. This may likely be due to ASUS’s implementation of how memory is handled. I have a 3200mhz CL16 Corsair memory kit in the system. I was considering a Gigabyte board because of the VRM reviews, and because I have had a great experience with them, which put me on the fence for a long time. However, I found articles noting the memory configuration on the Z390 Gigabyte boards didn’t perform as well as the ASUS boards, and the VRM issue may be a subjective issue because these new chips have different power requirements and electrical “behavior” (e.g. vdroop). Also, another reason I went ASUS was because I have an ROG STRIX 1080ti. Pairing the GPU with another ROG product worked out great, especially for RGB lighting purposes (AURA Sync). The rig runs beautifully (and stable), even on air cooling. It stays around 30-35C at idle, and just over 70C under heavy load. I plan on getting a water cooler soon, as I am also running the XMP memory profile in ASUS’ AI overclocking suite. Let me tell you, the AI overclocking feature is very nice to have. If you’re purchasing a Z- series board like this one, you are likely planning to overclock (the Z-series chipset is an enthusiast series for this purpose). This feature makes it very easy to find the best setting for your OC, or to give you a starting point to do it yourself. The AI also puts a rating on your cooler and adjusts the OC automatically. This board is the same as the Z390-E without built in wireless and Bluetooth (and second M.2 cover). I went with this specific board (without those features) because those technologies (WiFi and Bluetooth) have had a tendency to improve over time, where an expansion card or dongle seemed to make more sense. An expansion card or dongle would make it easier to upgrade in the future if needed. Aside from convenience of having them built in, I didn’t really see a benefit for my own use case to go for the Z390-E since I hard wire to my router for the least amount of latency while gaming. This is probably the 15th PC I have built in my lifetime, and is the first system I built with an ASUS motherboard. I have never dealt with ASUS customer support (haven’t had a reason to yet), so I can’t say whether or not they are good on that front. However, for a hardcore gamer, I recommend this board. It does not disappoint.

Instant overclock of my 9900k to 5.0 GHz all 8 cores at only 1.241v. So much for "4 phase SuX" lunacy going around from the arm chair engineers who don't even own this product or know the first thing about power supply design. I ran the AI tuning tool but it came out with the same overclock as the initial optimized setting of 5.0 across the board. Board allows you to set at least the lower M.2 NVMe slot to run at 2x (instead of full 4) to save from turning off SATA ports, very nice feature my old Gigabyte Designare Z390 could not do. Z390 just isn't good enough to run a bunch of NVMe drives without disabling ports (SATA, Thunderbolt, USB3.1, etc) so the option is very nice. 2X is about 2X a normal SATA port and sufficient for most midrange NVMe drives. Those wanting 4X (970 Pro, video editing, etc) may want to consider X299 or Threadripper setups for more lanes. Software is pretty good, doesn't seem like a long list of shovelware like I'm used to on other boards. PCIe 1x slots and 4x slot are in useful locations even with GPUs installed. I've always been a fan of having one slot above the GPU slot for things like USB expansion cards and such in particular, and the lower 4x slot will be useful for RST and a third/fourth NVMe drive, or more Thunderbolt/USB3.1, etc. Heatsink on lower M.2 slot is nice, it's likely where you'll want to install your first NVMe drive anyway. Very good fan controls. "AI" automatic fan tuning is great, too. I think this is an excellent option and possibly one of the best Z390 boards out there unless you are sold on the snake oil Killer NIC, want even more RGB-whatever, or want a Creative Labs-based sound card for DTS-over-TOSLink support (Realtek no longer licenses the codec necessary as of like 7-8 years ago unfortunately). Only negative is finding the XMP enable switch in BIOS is slightly difficult. Found it, but had to dig a bit. This is such a common thing that it should be easier. Not enough to knock a star off for me, though.

Description of Mother board did not state it was used. Although the price charged was the same a new board in 2020, when I purchased 3 of these. I expected this unit to be a new, never sold or used board. As delivered the CPU pins where bent so board was unusable.
