excellent for oil-based colored pencils
I find this sharpener produces a very nice, long tapered point that works very well for detailed colored-pencil work. An adjustable dial allows the user to control how sharp/blunt the final point is. I always use the sharpest setting, which works for most projects. The difference between various settings is not that dramatic. There are times where I need a point a bit sharper than the finest setting, but it is pretty quick and easy to manually sharpen the finest point to get it super sharp - it does not take much sanding or scribbling on the edge of the point to get to a very sharp point! For me, it works great for FC Polychromos, Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor, Koh-I-Noor Progresso Woodless and even thick, soft Derwent Drawing pencils. I couldn't be happier. I've had successes and failures with Prismacolor. A typical failure would be a small break at the tip of the pencil (which isn't that big of a deal to me). But with one Prismacolor pencil, the sharpener never "stopped". At some point I realized that it had been sharpening for too long, and when I pulled the pencil out, about 1 inch had been removed, and the lead was broken at the base. But I've also had successes without a problem. Please keep in mind that the manufacturer says to *not* sharpen wax-based pencils…so issues with Prismacolor, or Derwent, are not a reflection of the quality of the sharpener - it works perfectly as advertised. I've never had breakage with oil-based pencils.I think this sharper does it's job well, and is an amazing value. It works much better than the long-point hand sharpeners I've tried. I'd highly recommend trying it out.

Where has this been all my life?!
This beats the electric one if you care about the price. It sharpens my charcoal pencils nicely and has a variety of how you want the point to come out. The instructions were very clear and it even comes with sand paper installed on the wall inside the plastic case to make the tip extra pointy. I also use it to sharpen my color pencils.

Long points, no breakage
The sharpener works as expected and I love that I can get extra long points, however I rated it 4 stars due to some faults. The basket is easy to remove and empty and they also included an L piece to clean out shavings or stuck leads from the blades. However, the foam on the base does nothing to keep the sharpener from sliding around and the turn crank is very loose, flimsy plastic. The sharpener will grip the pencil once fed inside, so you don't have to struggle to hold the pencil and turn the crank, but you do need to hold the sharpener steady while you crank. I'm going to glue some non slip shelf liner to my base, but I wish it had suction cups or something to fix it to the desk. Overall great product and the crank is not difficult to turn at all.

Buy it! You won’t be sorry
Love this sharpener! I know who gets excited by a pencil sharpener but it’s perfect for a long, fine pencil point. Recommended by another mandala artist, I use it for mandala grids and stencils that need a fine point on soft chalk pencils.

The longest points I've ever seen
I already have an electric sharpener from Afmat and love it, so I thought I'd try the manual one. There are some times of day (or night, rather) that it's better to use a quiet sharpener!I like that you don't have to secure this to a table or anything. It self-feeds the pencil so you just hold the sharpener with one hand and use the crank with the other. I'd love to see it in sturdier metal instead of plastic, but on the other hand it's light enough to be quite portable.Okay, so this is how this sharpener really stands out -- the points are almost freakishly long!! It's great! In my photo it shows a pencil sharpened with the standard electric next to the harpoon-like pencil sharpened with this manual one. The photos don't do it justice. It's kind of awe-inspiring in real life, hah!So how did it do with my pencils? I had no trouble with any brand that I own. In the photo you can see Koh-I-Noor, Prismacolor, Derwent graphite, Polychromos, Derwent Inktense, and Prismacolor Verithin. I've also used it on watercolor pencils. As you can see, they all did well with it. It fits my fatter pencils (like Derwent) without a problem. When you feel the resistance of the crank drop off, the pencil is sharpened. You just reverse the crank a little to pull the pencil out. It's nice that there is a bit of sandpaper in the pencil shavings catcher so you can get a needle-sharp point if you wish. If you do that, you might want to use a lighter hand while drawing/coloring so the tip doesn't snap off from too much pressure.I've sharpened all my graphites with this and all the Verithins. I like how they feel with the super long points most of all.

Not good for artists
Sadly I am not impressed with this sharpener. It eats a lot of the pencil and does NOT get it to a fine point. I’m sure it’s great for every day use but for art pencils I would skip it.
