I studied Eng Lit at Oxford in the late 80s. I was asked to recommend some Classics for a teenager who is getting interested in reading. I bought this book to give myself a refresher - as my recent reading has been mainly Scandi crime and literary best-sellers. It really fit the bill and reminded me of some of the wonderful books and poetry I have read over the years - plus some of the gaps. I've now ordered some new translations of Old English lit - something I thought I would not go back to. The book is obviously a subjective view of literature, but it is so much more than a chronological description. Bate approaches it from the angle of posing interesting questions about literature. Really enjoyed it, thank you.

Como o nome da coletânea já sugere, é uma breve introdução. Muito bem elaborado por um dos grandes nomes de pesquisa acadêmica em Literatura Inglesa e em Shakespeare.

A good way to get related to a general overview on the English literature. It arrived on time and in good condition.

Some information is not accurate. On page 20, it is mentioned that Edward Said is Lebanese, but the truth is that he is Palestinian. I don't know whether this was intentional to remove the Palestinian identity or it was just a mistake. The book is too short and the pages are rather small. It is not well-organized.

Author Jonathan Bate takes the reader on a tour of the realm of English Literature. Along the way, he samples authors and literary genres, while carefully avoiding taking sides. He even dares to wrestle with the larger problem of definition (does English Lit include Irish, Welsh, and Scottish authors too?). It may be that he and the reader will just have to muddle through and enjoy the journey. At only 166 pages of text, this book can only be the briefest of surveys. The author has done his due diligence; the book is very readable. Well recommended, even if your last encounter was high school's English Lit.
