Nice little plane
I had an issue with the first one I was sent where by the front foot was jammed and did not adjust as it was meant to but was promptly sent a replacement. It seems to be pretty well set up out of the box but the sole looks like it will need some flattening to make it perfect, this is not unexpected at this price point though in my mind.Have not used it in anger yet but am fully expecting it to do a fine job based on the quick tests I have done, blade seems sharp enough out of the box but again could do with a proper sharpening to ensure the edge is clean and sharp.Perfectly serviceable tool worth the money paid for it.

Needs flattening for professional work
The face needed hand sanding on a flat stone but that's expected for this price.otherwise very good quality.

Six and a quarter inch
Amazon's dimensions are correct: 17.5 cm × 4.5 cm × 7 cm. Its name is "No. 9 1/2", it's not a 9.5 inch plane.17.5 cm is six and a quarter inches plus an adjustment knob.I'm not sure about precision ground faces, they were covered with an anti-rust lacquer which came off in 20 minutes with a stanley blade, and then took some wet & dry. Whatever, I didn't have to skim them...The blade came straight out for a refurb: the edge was rough -- wavy and chipped but not burred -- and looking as though it had come off second best in a fight with a grinder. 90 minutes of reprofiling and honing went by before I even considered trying it out. Now it shaves sausage skins off ikea spruce.Although the description is unequivocal and the manufacturer' packaging looked genuine, the logo on the side of the plane was a badly misprinted, peeling label. That, with the low standard of the blade, makes me wonder how much outsourcing S&J are doing in China.Still, it's cheap, easy to use and took less than two hours to set right and now I have a good little mini block plane.

Not bad
Nice block plane, is it the same as an old Stanley? No, but is it a good general plane? Yes it is. Out the box this thing was covered in oil (like dripping in oil) so will need a good clean. Blade will need a good sharpening (standard procedure on any new plane) my only gripe and why I knock a star off is considering he amount of oil it was covered in everything was really tight and took abit of work to get it all apart for cleaning and sharpening the blade. Not a major issue just abit baffling with the amount of oil it was covered in.
