The Heart of the Matter
"What Your Counselor Never Told You" is another insightful book by William Backus. After having read his book about "Telling Yourself The Truth", this book went to the heart of what goes on in our lives. Sin. It is our sinful human nature that battles against the truth of God's word and resists it, choosing to believe lies instead. With Christ's strength, we can battle those lies in order to live the way God wants us to. This book convicts and points out sin in great detail. I am so thankful for Jesus, my savior, for without Him I would have no hope.Backus categorizes sin into the seven deadly sins of envy, lust, gluttony, pride, sloth, anger and greed. In one of the chapters Backus mentions boredom, which seems to be a chronic problem in our society. He writes that "boredom is God's device for sounding an alarm, tyring to make us aware that, "you are serving the wrong God."This book is convicting, insightful and truthful. It goes right sin, the root of our problems. Definitely a worthwhile read!

I enjoyed this book more than almost any other I have read. It is more than helpful in understanding what is going on "behind the scenes" as it were. I love the way that it calls a spade a spade......in this world today that twist almost everything around. To deal with our character which, for me, this book is talking about, we must be totally honest with ourselves. Also that without God we do not have any answers. To see things as they really are. Without that, we will have no change in our lives. Thank you very much Dr William Backus.

A very worthwhile read
The book was very informative. The way it shows the relation between sin and mental problems is very solid. I enjoyed the tests that one can take to see how one related with the sin tests. I would highly recommend the book.

Great Christian approach
I think this book was balanced and helpful in dealing with the roots of emotional or psychological challenges. Dr. Backus is not against medicine, but he communicates that that is not an end in itself. Definitely a Christian book, so if you don't want to hear about sin, don't buy the book!

The truth of the matter is, unsuccessfully, I was dealing with my negative behavior at the fruit level (superficial level). Now I am about to see the root of the problem, which allow me to deal successfully with them. What an eye opener.
