Art From Her Heart: Folk Artist Clementine Hunter

Wording does not reflect today's climate
In general the book is nicely done. It gives a quick overview of the artist's life and reflects on the fact she was not able to enter through the front door of her own art show. I decided to return the book based on one page in the book that stated " there were good times on the plantation". I understood the implied meaning of the words, but I would be reading this book to elementary public school children who are distance learning and I am not prepared for the issues those words could create.

Problematic
This book is problematic. A few phrases made me cringe. Things like “good times on the plantation” and “would rather pick cotton.” If you know when she was living it’s not as bad but it’s not explained in the book that it was After slavery unless you read the bio at the end and for small readers they probably wouldn’t be able to make that distinction anyways. Very sad bc I was looking forward to reading about her. Wish her art was more prominent in the book also.

Important and inspiring!
Such a beautiful and important book. My students all loved it. The younger ones really loved the artwork and the older ones really were inspired by her.

True story of an American folk artist
I bought this book for my granddaughter who loves to draw and paint. I visited the plantation where the artist lived many years ago and learned about her and her art. This book is true to Clementine's story and includes some images of her amazing paintings.

Never too late
This book shows and tells us of how a slave woman accomplished her passion of painting on canvas despite her circumstances. The fact that she was a slave had nothing to do with what she did later on in her life. Ms Hunter had to wait to see her artistry display long after she painted them, but that did not stop anything for her.

art from her heart
Art from Her Heart: Folk Artist Clementine Hunter A very disappointing book for the price. One could get that story off the internet. Was expecting loads more and also more on her wonderful work and her personal history. Would suggest looking for something with loads more substance or just use the internet. Sorry about this but purchase loads of books to support authors and artists etc, but this my 11 year old son could have put together. Art from Her Heart: Folk Artist Clementine Hunter
