He even took it outside for school recess and sat and read instead of running around. GET THIS BOOK FOR A KIDDO IN YOUR LIFE. I literally just ordered him the second one, hope he loves that one too. Non reader kid LOVED THIS BOOK!
My nephew is 11 years old and he has been having issues at school because he hates to read. His teacher has tried many many books, he thinks everything is boring. My sister asked me for help finding a book I think he would actually read because I love books. So, I ordered this one and sent it to him. He received it last weekend and HE ALREADY FINISHED IT! it's only been six days, six days of school, after school, and sports practice. That's how much he loved it. He has called me multiple times to tell me how funny it is and how he can't put it down. He even took it outside for school recess and sat and read instead of running around. GET THIS BOOK FOR A KIDDO IN YOUR LIFE. I literally just ordered him the second one, hope he loves that one too.

Fantastic series
This is a fantastic series, I have listened to them and read them, and my sons (15 and 11) love them. I bought this one for a gift for a "sub for Santa" because I am pretty certain any boy would think these are great! The pictures are super fun, and the story is great even on its own (on audiobook). Better than the "Wimpy Kid" series in my opinion, although my sons would probably rate them pretty equally.

he would love this as well
I saw the sequel to this book posted on facebook and immediately ordered it for my son who loves to read. He is obsessed with DoaWK so I knew since the writer of that book commented on TLKoE, he would love this as well. Anyway, once I commented on the post the author sent me a message and said he'd like to send my son a signed sticker for each book. Such perfect timing since my little one was just about to turn 9 and these were part of his birthday presents! My son read the first book in TWO DAYS! He absolutely loved it! I was trying to hold on to the 2nd book but once the signed stickers arrived, I couldn't pass up the chance to surprise my son with not only the book, but the stickers as well! I've attached some photos here for you to see just how much my son loved the book. The first photo is him receiving the sequel and the next couple of photos are of him realizing he now has autographed stickers for each book! Max Brallier has written a great series and has fabulous communication with his fan base! we are definitely looking forward to the future books in this series coming out!

Wish it didn't have sexist language and ideas
I'm a 4th grade teacher, and so I can see the appeal of this series to boys steeped in a Wimpy Kid sensibility. On the plus side, the author does great things with similes, and his main character is fairly well developed and addresses his emotional ups and downs. On the negative side, the author perpetuates some negative tropes about the differences between boys and girls. For instance, when searching for the missing love interest, the main character says, "Let's try the mall. Girls like the mall, right? That's a thing." The worst example is when the main character tries to convince his friend to keep a monster as a pet. After the friend declines, the character says, "Quint, I hear you telling me no. But I think, I'm pretty sure, your eyes are telling me yes." And then he takes the monster into the house. That's the stereotypical line leading up to date rape, so why is it showing up in boys' literature right in the middle of the Me-Too era? If it goes to a second print, maybe the publisher can edit this kind of stuff out. Otherwise, it's a great series for boys.

A fantastic first book
My son is obsessed with this series, we started on book 7 before realizing we needed to start with 1. Slowly purchasing the whole series for him Would recommended :)
