Required Reading
This book is, to my mind, essential for anyone serious about philosophy, and even more critical for anyone who cares about early modern philosophy. The selections contained herein are excellent, and naturally tie in with the major male thinkers of the time. The book should be required in every Modern Philosophy Survey course.Of particular interest to me is how devastating Elizabeth's correspondence with Descartes is. Top shelf philosophical thought, without question.

A valuable teaching resource. But we're desperately waiting for the second edition.
This has been a very useful textbook, especially for classroom use. However, it is surprising that it does not seem to have been updated and expanded at all since it was released in the 1990s. Really, it is quite brief -- and you could certainly argue that it was too abbreviated even at the time it was compiled.Since then, there has been a great boom and expansion of scholarship in, and awareness of, its source material. This should enable an enhanced commentary and glosses on the material in a new version.
