Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats Paperback – June 15, 1995

I highly recommend this book. The information is invaluable and the subject is presented in easy-to-understand English (not filled with technical and medical jargon). Dr. Pitcairn covers just about every major aspect of your dog's/cat's general and nutritional health. I did not receive the impression that Pitcairn was advocating a complete switch to home-cooked foods versus manufactured kibble or you would put your dog at risk. Most of the animals he presents as case studies were elderly or chronically sick to begin with and had nothing to lose. He merely points out that nutrion is the foundation for good health and our dogs and cats are often being compromised in this due to the nutrional choices we make for them. I purchased this book mainly so I could enhance my own Cairn Terrier's super-premium kibble with tasty and nutritious additions that would further optimize her food. Let's face it, most premium foods opt for good nutrition over gourmet taste. I asked my vet but he had no recommendations. Dog and Cat owners should be careful. Very few vets today have any great understanding about the pet food industry because it is not covered during their studies. I was shocked to learn that the pet foods offered for sale in my vet's office were there because the manufacturer rents the space from him and places the products on the shelves. That is the reason this book is so important. The chapters on flea control, weight problems, and general topics like spay and neutering, and even the death of your animal were a truly pleasant surprise. Every dog or cat owner should have this book.

This book was my introduction into the world of all-natural pet care. I have one cat with severe allergies, and another with Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). The conventional vet I was going to wanted me to put the FLUTD cat on prescription food which was very expensive, and totally tasteless (I assume, since it had no odor at all and the cat refused to eat it). And my allergic cat, he had no solution for (in fact, they told me at first that he was obsessive-compulsive and wanted me to put him on kitty-Xanax!). After all of this, I decided to look for another vet, and different solutions to these problems. I found this book, and read it almost from cover to cover. I was so thrilled, especially with the recipes for an all-natural diet for them. I have been cooking these for them now for almost 3 years, and they love it! The allergies are still a problem, but reduced -- and the FLUTD seems completely under control! Now, we do have a new, holistic vet that we go to who also helped with the FLUTD, but the diet, and accompanying homeopathic preventives, have kept him from having any major crystal formations in his urine for almost 2 years! I highly recommend this book to all pet owners. I discussed the diet with the new vet, and he made a few adjustments to the ingredients, but told me it was a great thing for them. I give this book 5 stars!

Good Book - addresses lots of subjects and gives you a brief overview of problems. This will not replace your vet but will give you a good idea of what to do next.

When I rescued my Chesapeake 17 years ago, he was a mess. About 6 months old, skinny and mangy. His immune system was no good. Three vets told me he would not see his second birthday. I stumbled onto this book and used it well. Sadly, I did finally lose him - two years ago. He made it to 13 and our golden made it to 16, thanks in large part to the benefits of this book. Love the recipes and the healhy powder. The reason I write this now is I just bought a new copy for our puppy (I lent the old one out).

The best book ever. This edition has helped me heal and saved my dogs numerous times.I have learned so much and use it all the time for shock, behavior issues, Thyroid problems and birthing problems. Love this so much.The best

A friend of mine let me borrow her book so that I could copy some of the recipes to use for my new puppy. I found myself reading and interested in everything in this book from front to back and am buying myself my own copy! I think this is going to be real beneficial for my cats. I have noticed that they are not as in good health as they ought to be. Things like cuts don't heal very quickly and almost always leave scars, and they don't have very shiny coats makes me sceptical of their overall health. I think this book will definetly help. I want my pets to live as long as they can; I can't imagine being without them!
