Q: Can this bag handle heavy books?

Day to day, I'm not sure. My daughter's school doesn't use books. She carries a music binder, music, pencil case, three 3-subject spirals and a Nintendo 3DSXL. Loaded, the bag is probably 7-8 pounds. I have carried heavy library books in a book bag, like the LL Bean bags - 30 pounds easy. This messenger bag is not flimsy, but you can't stuff it like a book bag. I would not expect it to carry 30 pounds. Ten pounds you could do, though. One issue would be the books' design. Some hardback schoolbooks are thick, have sharp corners, and while they might fit, would rub and abrade the bag, leading to premature failure. But this bag can easily accommodate a laptop, tablet, novel or two. Depends on how ling you want it to last. My daughter really likes it and wants it to last for a least four years. Thus is the only bag she uses (no purse.)
