No gridline marking
Great book. It is a bit on the big side. However, the maps are only as useful as the markings of the gridlines. And there are none!

Desolation review.
I just went down the green river using this map and all went fairly well. No major issues to speak of. We did run into a few instances where the topo did not match the actual river and surrounding canyons, caused a little confusion around Joe Hutch rapids, but other than a few mile stretch we were able to complete the trip and orient ourselves to our location on the river. Truely water proof and I liked this map a little better than the alternates as this was physically larger and the layout was oriented to travelling down river, our other map had to be turned upside down to actually orient you to how we were travelling. So basically when you get this book and look at it north is pointing where you would think south is on a regular map, but when you are on the river north is behind you and this map makes allot of sense once you are travelling... I hope I explained that properly. Either way, you can do this trip with this map, no problems.

Awesome Guide Book
I just got back from a 5 day trip down the Green River through Desolation and Gray Canyons. I really enjoyed this guide book and map. I knew where I was at at times. The book identified landmarks and showed photos of them which made it easy to confirm your location. Most of the campsites were identified by the book and had nice descriptions. The book also identified several hikes that we did. The hikes were great. Two of them lead us to ancient petroglyphs. All of the rapids were identified on the map with their class identified. The book is waterproof, and we put that to the test. On several occaisions the book was doused by a rapid wave and the book held up just fine. We had another guidebook that someone else bought, and we hardly used the other one. This was the book we used over and over again. It doesn't get any better than this.

Excellent River Map
This is an excellent river map that has served my group well on 2 Desolation/Gray Canyon river trips. My one warning would be to either keep it securely tied to something or wrapped in something that will make it float. Deso often gets strong winds and my Deso trips are currently 2 for 2 in someone having their map blown into the water only to sink before the map could be retrieved. I suspect there are many of these maps lying on the Green River bed.

Good guide; doesn't substitute for a good map
The guide has good details on every turn of the river. (I haven't run the river yet, so I can't attest to accuracy.) The color maps in the back are small scale and would be difficult to read in action. Get a full-scale waterproofed map to accompany this guide. Note: Permits are hard to get. Get your lottery permit first, then buy a book.
