So far, so good - take the unrolling warning seriously
I'm reviewing this right away since there were no reviews when I bought it's, but do plan to update after using for awhile to see how it holds up.The mat is thick and comes rolled up with a warning to use caution unrolling. Yeah, that's not just one of those "the lawyers said we had to" warnings... This thing SHOT OPEN and laid almost completely flat immediately! Do yourself a favor: when it's time to unroll, make sure you are far enough away from your desk that the wind from the opening doesn't blow all your papers everywhere (like it did for me!)So far the mat is allowing for a very smooth roll with my standard 5-wheeled chair. No divots in the carpet yet - the "paperclip test" had the depth of about 3/4" for carpet and pad + I'm pretty heavy. The mat has a like bit of texture down in the photo.

Worth it!
We hesitated buying this because we thought it was expensive. It is, but you definitely get what you pay for! I waited over 2 months to review because I wanted to see how it would hold up. We have new, very plush carpet and our old mat just swallowed up the chair rollers. This mat is completely flat, with no dents or divots from the chair or desk. It so easy to roll around. I would buy this again!2/21 update: the mat is cracking where the chair rollers sit the most, to the point that shards of plastic are coming up. For the price and how heavy duty it is, we were hoping that we would get more than 1.5 years out of it.

The best chair mat I've ever used; be careful when opening!
This is the best chair mat I have ever used on carpet. I've bought more chair mats than I can remember from places like Office Depot, Office Max, Sam's Club, Staples, Walmart and IKEA. They've all had the same issue; they are too soft and fairly quickly the chair begins to form grooves and low spots in the mat.To my surprise this AmazonBasics floor mat is everything I could have hoped for in a chair mat. First of all it is absolutely crystal clear with a mild textured finish. It is the best looking chair mat I have personally seen. Second it is made of an extremely hard and dense polycarbonate. It lays flat on the carpet and the teeth on the bottom hold it in place. There are two things I would suggest being aware of when buying this chair mat, however. The first is that the teeth on the bottom are extremely sharp. While lifting the mat to move it my finger slipped and I sliced it open on the hard plastic. The second is that this mat EXPLODES open. I had seen other reviews that mentioned this and the mat itself is wrapped in several layers of material to constrain it. That's right, it's not wrapped for shipping purposes, it's wrapped to KEEP IT CONSTRAINED. There is a very thorough paper taped to the map that explains how to open the mat in great detail. The instructions suggested having two people holding it and very slowly trying to unroll it. I thought I could safely sit on top of it to pin it down and try to slowly unroll it myself; it didn't go quite as I expected. I sat on top of the rolled up and bound chair mat, applying my weight to hold it down. I then carefully sliced the restraining wrap and started to slowly let it unfurl... within 2 seconds the mat exploded open with a loud bang! I wasn't hurt nor do I think I was in any danger of being hurt but it certainly surprised me; I had never seen a chair mat like this before. To my surprise the chair mat was entirely flat immediately and looked great (you won't have to unroll it and put weights on each corner for hours to try and get it flattened like many other chair mats). In conclusion I'm extremely satisfied with this chair mat and will not hesitate to buy more of them in the future. AmazonBasics has got a winner here!

This review is for thick pile carpet version
The mat is delivered flat. I followed the instructions before ordering where I measured the depth to the sub floor. What a waste of time. I expected the grippers to point down at least a half inch or more, but they are just dimples that somewhat hold the mat in place. I am not heavy but the chair does curve the edges of the mat up when it nears the edges. So all in all it does the job, but nowhere near as firm and robust as I was led to believe.Update: the dimples DO NOT hold the mat in place!

Sturdy, but moves on the carpet which is frustrating.
I went for the higher priced item hoping it would be top notch. There's no doubting the firm, sturdiness of the material, but the spikes on the bottom are way too small and do not grip the carpet, meaning it shifts around on the floor over time. Quite frustrating for how expensive it is.

Most durable char mat I have seen yet!
This is probably the first review I have ever left for anything on Amazon (Sorry Amazon I will try to do better :) ). The quality of this chair mat compelled me to take the time out of my busy day to write this. I am in the process of building a home office that has very thick carpet (Approx 3/4 inch). I started by looking at Staples and Office Depot and they were asking the same price or more for something not nearly as durable as this.Pros:- Lays flat immediately after removing it from the box- Very thick and durable material- Does not flex or bend when sitting in my basic chair with 5 caster wheels (I am 170 lbs)- Chair rolls on mat as if I were sitting on hard wood (Hence why I am writing this review)Cons:- None yet. I will update this review if the mat doesn't stand the test of time and daily useWARNING: When unpacking the mat, read the warning label carefully. As other reviewers have pointed out, this thing expands like someone just fired a cannon. This may seem bad, but this "side effect" is why the mat lays flat immediately and is so durable and doesn't flex or bend when in use.Note: I have only been using it for a day, so time will tell how it holds up.

Dangerously sharp edges and won't stay put!
I bought two of these for my wife and myself less than a month ago, and I already regret it. The damn things don't stay where you place them for more than an hour. I thought they would be fine on our looped carpet, but the spikes that are supposed to hold this thing in place are only 3mm long and totally rounded, rendering them completely useless. Moving my chair off of this thing multiple times per day to move it back into the right spot is incredibly frustrating.Even worse than that are the sharp edges all over these things. Literally every edge of this thing is sharp enough to cut your skin. My wife sliced her foot open on hers and bled all over the carpet we were trying to protect. And I just cut my finger open taking measurements of this thing. Absolutely no consideration was given to the safety of this product. The sad part is that if they hadn't royally messed up with the carpet spikes and took about 10 seconds per mat to file down the sharp edges, this would actually be a good product. I've had them less than a month but they do seem quite sturdy. But its flaws really make this thing not worth considering.

Spikes are too short – Mat slides on thick carpets
Amazon specifies a thick carpet is over 0.75 inches, including underlay. My carpet is exactly 1 inch including underlay. This is advertised as a mat for thick carpets, however the spikes that hold the mat in place are too short for a thick carpet. When I rolled my a chair on the mat, it would slide out of place on my carpet. Also, the edges are not beveled if I took the chair off the mat, sometimes the rollers would whack into the edge of the mat and I would have to lift the chair over the edge.Although it's well-made, for these reasons I gave it 2 stars.

Office Chair mat on thick pile carpet : Backing spikes TOO SHORT
Received the mat today rolled up and packaged in a rectangular cardboard box. Delivery is as promised, timely.Having read about warnings by previous buyers, I laid the item across a sufficient clear floor space large enough to accommodate the mat size when unfurled. The item is secured by some tough plastic sheet in the middle. With a sharp knife and standing well clear of the roll at one end, I reached across to cut the securing tape. As expected, the mat unrolled in an instant into a full sheet. Quite scary!. To prevent shifting, I placed a corner of the mat under a stool leg. BUT, I am very surprise by the puny spikes in the backing. They are a mere 1/8" at most! Except perhaps for the material stiffness, and maybe thickness, I can't see how they are different from from the ordinary/normal ones sold in Staples. I scanned all the types available on Amazon for very thick pile carpet, and read all the product reviews. This type seemed to be well favored. BUT I have expected it to come with spikes a lot longer , for thick pile carpet! Not 1/4"!. No wonder the mat will shift if it is not "held down" in some part. Or have I received the wrong product?

Works ok, but with some problems
Protects the carpet well. It's thick and sturdy and the chair rolls easily. However, my carpet is about ½" thick and I have to push the mat back in position every day. Also, it is supposed to have a lip, but it hasn't, so a chair wheel often ends up outside the mat, and it makes the mat move when you roll back on it again.

Good but not for thick carpet!
The product is nice! However, the PILE CHART is INCORRECT. I checked based on their chart for Thick Pile carpet and bought the mat for the thick carpet. The mat keeps shifting and the pins at the bottom of the mat aren't long enough to grip the carpet. So, if you do have a carpet that is over 0.75" (mine is 1") note that it will shift and you would need to fix it several times in the day.
