A fascinating contemporary account of the beginnings of the Great Game
Well written and entertaining, Alexander Burnes' tale of his journeys through present day Pakistan and Afghanistan, ending up in the historical city of Bokhara. This book is referred to frequently in Peter Hopkirk's book 'The Great Game'.An exceptional read for anyone interested in the early days of British Colonialism and their competition with Russia for commerce and expansion of influence.

I just have been wandering over its pages, but as soon as can will read it, as it seems highly interesting to know more about the "Great game"

Great edition to a masterwork of travel writing/human observation
A thrill for numismatists and travel buffs alike. Nice edition with explanatory notes. Burnes was a humane man, far ahead of his time. Very readable, not overwrought Victorian prose. Clear and even funny.

Dry, but fairly adventurous reading!
Burnes interest in Afghanistan seduced England into eventual conflict. The story remains unchanged in the region, even today!Be careful what you wish for...

I am quite satisfied with my purchase
The book came in record time. It is a little slow reading because it is written at a different time than now. I am quite satisfied with my purchase.

Manufactured Poorly
The books content is great! One star for the fact that, upon first opening the paperback version, the binding broke and two sections of the book fell out. Never have I ever received such a poorly manufactured piece of literature.
