great film, brilliant performances all round, but Nolte's especially.

This is an absolutely incredible film about psychological deterioration in a small town. The narrator informs the viewer from the very beginning that something utterly horrendous is going to occur, something unmentionable between family and friends. Nolte, the central character, was never better: a tormented man, he has lost his family, his job is in jeopardy, and he must take on the caring for his alcoholic and abusive father.The plot turns on a suspicious death, which Nolte wants to investigate as sheriff. However, as he enters a terrible downward spiral, he begins to burn all of his bridges and eventually loses his grip. The slowly unwinding tragedy is truly agonizing to watch, the acting is absolutely first rate. Recommended for those with strong stomachs.

If your thinking of buying this , I have one word of advice - DONT. I would suggest you may want to look through wedding photographs from a previous failed marriage or maybe stab rusty needles into your eyes , because both of which would be far more entertaining and less painful than watching this awful drivel.If you like movies that are so slow they make watching paint dry seem positively breathtaking or where the acting makes prisoner of cellblock H seem like Olivier in Hamlet , then this is for you . Rarely have I seen such a dull movie . The plot is like a script rejected from 'murder she wrote ' and the acting (despite some very well respected actors and actresses ) is more wooden than Pinocchio's erection.I honestly feel cheated that I paid 50p for this truly dreadful movie .
