Q: Will this work for a board with 'Y' legs?

I use it with a T-leg ironing board. Not sure it works with a Y-leg ironing but have seen pics of similar ironing boards holding Y-leg boards.

Q: I have a very old and heavy ironing board. Ia this holder strong enough to hold if attached to the wall?

It's plenty strong, though actually attaching the ironing board can be a tad tricky. The heads on the provided screws aren't big enough to hold it. I had to got to the hardware store to buy some washers to help. (The washers cost just a few pennies each.)

Q: Will this iron holder hold all size irons?

I have the Rowenta Steamforce 1800W iron which the faceplate is 5 inches wide. I have the Rubbermade iron holder which is also 5 inches wide from one side to the other, but will not allow the iron to slip down into the crevice that holds it. What size iron fits in this Better Houseware iron holder and how wide is it at the side pieces that hold the iron in place? It must be wider than 5 inches at the side pieces.

Q: What are the limits in terms of width for the iron? I have a Rowenta that is 5 inches wide and the iron sole plates and body are 3 in deep.

I am not sure, but should work. My iron is 4-3/4 by 3 deep and there is still ample room for larger irons.
