Cooking on salt = good eats
These bricks are the way to go if you want to grill at high temp on salt. The thickness and price of the blocks is the key, there are plates with a larger area available but they are thinner and more expensive.I first started cooking on Himalayan salt over a year ago, while I was trying to decide if it was worth the trouble and expense, my wife found one of these at the local tack shop for less than $10. After some shrimp and beef fillets we were sold on this as a great technique for providing a flavor that is just a little different. I recently went to upgrade my salt cooking capacity with 3 more bricks, since the original tack shop doesn't carry them and I couldn't find cheaper than here on Amazon, I picked up three of these. They are the same as my original so shop hard before you buy it would seem the price is variable based on end use.Tips:Bring the temperature up slow to remove any moisture from the bricks prior to high heat. Internal moisture can cause the bricks to crack and even shatter if brought to higher temps to quickly.Get them really hot before adding food, a drop of water should dance on top just like if you where cooking in a WOK. If the bricks are not hot enough the food will basically stew in it's juices pulling way to much salt. You will know if you cooked on cold bricks since the food will be to salty and leave deep dents in the salt bricks. GET THOSE BRICKS HOT. You basically want to sear and finish cook at the high temp so cooking times are short don't worry you will still get plenty of the flavor pickup.Don't use marinates you don't want to add extra liquid to meats or veg because it will increase the stewing action even at high heat.Don't use spices with salt you will get plenty from the bricks, for beef I just go with black pepper. Stay away from prefab spices they all contain salt.

Really Cool Presentation or Hot
Good product....follow directions for use !!!Can't beat it's ephemeral effects when making a presentation...sushi, for example...and it's temperature retention hot or cold.

All that I dreamed of and more.
When my block arrived, I was excited to try it out immediately. First thing I did was serve sushi on it. Stellar reception. The salt delicately rubbed off onto the rice, and gave a fantastic flavour. Then I tried green mango. Even better! Smoked aubergine. Lovely. Omusubi? Divine.Mind you, the brick isn't huge huge, so you're only going to get two rolls (long rolls of sushi) on there after slicing it up, but what a presentation it makes! I'm quite excited to continue discovering ways to use my salt block. When I'm not using it to serve, I set it in a sunny spot, so that the light can shine through it and show off the pretty marbling.

Really excellent way to cook - but be sure to read cautions in review
Absolutely love the salt block cooking and have become quite an enthusiast. IMPORTANT NOTE: The blocks did not come with instructions, so I ordered Mark Bitterman"s "Salt Block Cooking" - which has some great history about the blocks and recipes. He recommends rinsing the blocks with water before the first and after each use. The water DEGRADES THE BLOCK. Use a lightly damp cloth if needed, or better, yet, just scrape the block with a stainless steel spatula. Additionally, I did not know until I called the seller that these blocks are not cookware grade, and therefore, should only be used for cold items. IF you want chicken under a brick or other hot items, be sure to get cookware grade. The seller was great to work with.

good starter purchase..lots of hype
We first heard about salt block cooking via a PBS radio interview. We cooked 8 shrimp on this last night. They tasted as good as they would have if we had hand-tossed them in a skillet. We won't bother buying a bigger salt block. We are going to serve a shrimp cocktail to an intimate (one other couple) dinner party on this block. It will at least be a conversation piece.Note....the included directions are very clear for cooking......as in getting the block hot. No guidance for cold presentations. So not wanting to freeze the shrimp I have the block in the frig pre-cooling.

good price and size
Very good price and the block is a good size-has a crack but is still all in one piece so I am hoping it will still work okay-would have given 5 stars if it were not for the crack and it was the best price I was able to find.

First time salt block user
I've never used a salt block before so I was very excited to get in the mail. It was a relief that the block came with a little pamphlet for cleaning instructions and how to best cook with it. It seems they could be very temperamental to use so I'm glad fora the tips.the block itself was smaller than I expected when it arrived, but it was useful for small things.

Would have scored higher but received with a big crack ...
Would have scored higher but received with a big crack across 1/3 the block; Have used once already with no problem but I'm apprehensive about its longevity.
