BatesMen's GX-4 4 Inch Ultra-Lites GTX Waterproof Boot

Perfect for Patrol.
These boots are excellent for the price. I've been at traffic collision investigations for hours in the rain in these and no water seepage whatsoever. While it doesn't rain as much in Los Angeles, when it rains, it -really- rains. I originally purchased these in May 2016, wore them through the Police Academy, on Patrol, ran in them chasing suspects on tile flooring without sliding as well as dry dirt and mud and still maintaining traction. These are my only pair of boots, I wear them everyday doing basic patrol and they still hold up. They are extremely lightweight which makes it great for running and jumping around. They do squeak a little, but unless you're on tile flooring all day you won't even notice. Fit is spot on. They will hold a shine and have no issues with the shine at the 'toe-bend' area up front cracking the polish and I even wear them for special occasions in my blues. There are areas on the sole of the boot and the sides around the ball of your feet where the siding is beginning to come off -- certainly not as quickly as some others have stated. This is only beginning to happen about 13-14 months after initial use. They support well, especially since they are only 4" boots, and i've had great ankle support right out of the box. I've worn these on the pavement in heat waves without feeling like the bottom of my feet are on fire. The insole will eventually need replacing (just like any other), but for the price and considering weight, they are "most excellent!".

Waterproof
Let's start by saying I run through boots. I get new boots yearly as I work in harsh conditions in Florida as a law enforcement officer. I run through swamp land and am on my feet 9-12 hours intermittently throughout the day. I a need waterproof boots and yearly purchases add up. I've gone through Danners, Timberland Pros, Magnums, New Balance, Under Armor, etc. So on to the boot. These boots fit to size nicely. They absolutely are waterproof so far. I added a couple of insoles (which I always do) and they feel like a pair of sneakers. They are light weight and dont go half way up your calf which is a bonus. They are holding up well as I've ran through many wooded areas through mud, canals, swamp areas, and around urban area. I will definetly be repurchasing these boots as my go to boots.

Great boots but noisy
Great fitting and comfortable boots. Great if you are standing/ walking for prolonged periods. I would have given 5 stars but the only problem I had with these boots is that they made an incredible amount of noise when walking on tiled/linoleum etc...floors. the loud squeaking noise was not from inside but from the outside soles. I tried rubbing dryer sheets on the soles as advised online but only helped a little. Online advise also said rub soles with fine sandpaper so I actually rubbed them on the cement sidewalk as I walked and that finally did the trick. I found this noise ridiculous and embarrassing. Other than the noise the boots are great.

Great boots!
I looked for quite a while to find a boot this size that was waterproof (thanks to the Gore-Tex)... I have Danners (which I love) but they are a much larger boot & as a pilot, I need the room for the pedals! They took a little while to break in but I've had them for a month & so far I have been happy... Actually considering buying a second pair...Update 2016:I just received my second set! I am admittedly VERY hard on my boots. I wear them day in and day out for work, play, etc. I've had these Bates for over 4 years & 3 of those years these were pretty consistently daily-worn. This includes work on hard surfaces (concrete/asphalt), hiking, yard work, etc. You name it, they've seen it and they've really held up great! I washed them about twice a year and used Danner boot dressing each time and I ended up adding a sole liner for additional padding but even now, they're still pretty much water proof. If my new set lasts half as long as these have, I'll be more than satisfied! The pictures show them as they are now after the 4 years of hard use. As far as I'm concerned, you can't go wrong with these!

Excellent
My first pair of Bates and I'm very pleased. Broke-in in one day, comfortable, great quality and good fit. They run true to size. Excellent product! Also - I have had them in a pretty good rain on my bike and my feet stayed dry.

Good boots, but sole separating after 10 months use.
I'm on my feet in the kitchen 10-12 hours and have used these boots for 10 months.Pros: Price point is goodSomewhat water resistantLightweightSomewhat comfortableHas some slip resistanceCons:Its only been 10 months and the sole is separating allowing water to get in and soak my socks.Although these boots are slip resistant, they are not as good as my old Timberlands. The comfort of these boots last about 6-8 hours if you're constantly on your feet. After that the insole becomes uncomfortable.Update: Purchased a second pair and the outer sole is beginning to separate. No water is getting in so far, but I suspect it'll show the same signs as my last pair. One other thing I've noticed is that if you're on your feet constantly 8-12 hours, the treads on the outer sole also wear around 9-11 months making the shoe more prone to slips. I've decided to try a different brand until bates develops a boot that lasts longer than a year with heavy usage.

Nice boots
I’ve been buying these boots for the past 6-7 years. My biggest advice is they are not true to their size, they fit bigger so always order smaller. I normally wear a shoe size 10-10.5, but in this boot I wear a 9.5 wide. It fits really good, it’s good quality, waterproof and lasts a long time.

Could not insert foot into boot without completely unlacing
Came in a Bates box, initial appearance very good, but that is where it ended. Could not insert foot into boot with out a struggle and completely unlacing boot. Foot bed very tight. Poor lacing system. Both boots marked size 9.5 as ordered. Date of manufacture 10/22. Made in Vietnam. Had just ordered a pair of Bates Durashock boots, same size a couple of weeks ago and they fit fine. Those were made in Bangladesh.

Excellent boots
Very comfortable. The only drawback is the inside lining is white which mat not be approved by many LEAs. Yet to pass the durability test but so far these are one of the best tactical boots I have worn, besides Reno Gear.

If you have a high instep - don’t buy.
I thought the boots looked great. The price was excellent.I had extreme difficulty putting them on. I have a high instep and wide feet so I sent them back. Amazon was great to deal with!

Great purchase
Fits perfectly, have always bought Bates boots and shoes. Always fit the same way, true sizing. Last long, warm and waterproof with goretex and thinsulate.

Regular width has high volume across instep
These are the Bates models I currently own: Shock 8" Medium width, Delta 8" EW (extra wide) along with this pair GX-4 Medium width. Comparing these 3 pairs, I'd personally found this shoe to have a higher volume instep, even though it's a medium width. This is not a negative, just something I'd noticed and may be an ideal fit for some. Personally I prefer really snug fitting shoes, so they won't feel sloppy, after being broken in.Item arrived quickly and well packaged (in another box, surround by protection)I live in a rainy climate, so the Gore-Tex is a really nice feature. The lining of this model is also really nice.Managed to catch my size on sale. Sub $100 Canadian is a really good deal on a solid boot with Gore-Tex I feel. Amazon and their Bates Store seem to rotate sales on various sizes occasionally, so I'd recommend to check in frequently.
