Sibling songwriting duo Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman (the men responsible for the immortal Mary Poppins) bring us a pair of musical Mark Twain adaptations: Tom Sawyer (1973), a light-hearted look at life along the Mississippi, and the more serious Huckleberry Finn (1974), which touches (more lightly here, of course, than in the original) on the subject of race in America. Acting honors in Tom Sawyer go to vets Celeste Holm and Warren Oates, and to little Johnny Whitaker and a very young Jodie Foster; in Huckleberry Finn, adolescent Jeff East is paired with the great Paul Winfield. Great movies, clear and crisp to the eye.
I saw these originally when they came out to the theatre in 1973-1974. Thr films were great and families took their kids to see the films. The dvd’s are blue ray and they and great and very clear. The colors are vivid and are appealing to the eye. With the music and the story, Mark Twain would give this performance of Johnny Whitaker- Tom Sawyer and Jeff East -Huck Finn, 2 thumbs up for their roles in these two films, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Tom Sawyer was filmed in Arrow Rock, MO.

The best of both boys!
These are both heartwarming musicals from the stories by Mark Twain. Most of the songs were catchy, too, but the song "What's Right, What's Wrong?" relates to many people who learn from their mistakes and try hard to right their wrongs. It's pretty rare for the songwriting Sherman Brothers to write the screenplays, too.

Great Family Fun
Two excellent versions of the Mark Twain characters on fine looking bluray. Wonderful G rated entertainment.

Could have been a better transfer
While wide screen, as the original film, the transfer is rather grainy. May be adequate, but not the best transfer.

Delightful!
FINALLY! I'd been waiting for many years to get Tom Sawyer on Blu-ray. It's much better than the standard DVD, of course. If you're a fan of this movie, this is a "must buy".

I think some of the other reviewers have their movies mixed up...
I remember this film fondly from my childhood, and recall that it had a whimsical charm about it, fun for all ages. A faithful adaptation of the book? Perhaps not. But nevertheless an endearing nostalgic piece of engaging entertainment. It would seem that those who are detracting from its merits, particularly those who complain about Val Kilmer (who isn't even in either of these films) have their movies crossed, and should be more careful where they place their reviews. Or it may be Amazon's fault for the mixups. I dunno. Whatever the reason, I would say don't shy away from this production, particularly if you want some good clean family entertainment.
