Dietz #2500 Jupiter Oil Lantern (Blue)

I have many oil lanterns throughout my house - some as decoration (but fully functional) and others stationed/stored in the event of power outage. All are fueled and burned on rotating cycles to ensure functionality/serviceability.Previously, i bought inexpensive Wal-Mart-esque cheap lanterns thinking they were all the same. Not so!I haven't tried Feuerhand or other lantern brands aside from the cheapies, but the Dietz lanterns have proven to be an excellent balance of price/quality. Despite being made "off-shore" since the mid-1970's, the lanterns are made with the very same tools developed/made by the original Dietz company.This particular lantern (Dietz #2500 "Jupiter") has a HUGE, cavernous fuel reservoir - like 84oz - more than half a gallon! I say fuel because it requires Kerosene instead of regular lamp-grade oil. Others may 'correct' me, but per the manufacturer lamp oil should not be used.Anyway, the lantern is pretty bright as far as lanterns go - it's not LED bright, but bright enough to easily read by. There is some initial odor, but it's not too bad and I've gotten used to it so I now barely notice it. Also, these lanterns also put off some bit of heat. Noticeable if it's sitting nearby, but not like it's going to heat up an entire room.I keep the globe clean and dust-free as part of the regular maintenance and probably should order a couple back-up globes because the glass is very thin.

I just got this Lantern yesterday and it is quite the lantern, it is larger than you would expect, i havent used it yet, but it is well built, and the base is very wide making the lantern very stable, it has a large capacity tank, and the filler hole is flat on top of the tank, making it easier to fill, and less likely to spill or leak.I would reccomend this to anybody that needs a great reliable lantern for emergency use, or everyday use.

It’s perfect for power outages. Everyone should have a couple of these with an extra wick and extra oil you won’t be hurting for light if the power goes out.

This is a very nice lantern. Even though it is made in china, it is very sturdy and well made. It puts out a lot of light without flickering. The large reservoir means much less filling and/or refilling.

It arrived well packaged and on time. I unboxed and yes, it is large. I fueled it with unscented fuel and as an aside, the unscented is pretty much unscented. I let it warm up and raised the wick with the adjustment knob. It does put out a lot of light. The beauty of it is, that the family; not checked out on the Coleman pressure lanterns; can just light this one and they're set. It will out last my Coleman lanterns on a tank of fuel and is much cheaper to operate. The light it gives off is a subtle hue and it is pleasant, homey even. I would say, at my campsite, restful. It is simple and due to its simplicity it seems likely will last, with reasonable care, for a very long time. You can read by it, sew by it, sit close and move around the campsite or room pretty well. No need for a lot of replacement parts. It will operate with wind or a strong breeze, or even rain. So, for preparation for when power goes out, or worse; get a couple. You won't be disappointed.

It works.Production quality seems fine.Would gladly pay more for better quality materials which would make it more durable.

It comes ready to fill and light. It has a large reservoir and works as expected. Fill with good oil, trim the end of the wick and then wait a bit for the oil to soak the wick. Lights up quickly, has good control, good paint job, etc. The burner seems to be designed very well; you can get the flame up almost to the top of the globe before the flame starts to separate and cause smoking. Firefly Clean Lamp Oil works very well in this.

The metal is very this, and the glass is so this it will break almost immediately. If it will be lit and hung, it may be good, but as flimsy as it is, it is a fire hazard.
