Optical Dynamics OD50 50mm Direct Light Illuminator CALS Collimated Amplified Lens System Tactical Flashlight

I purchased the OD50 in green for night sighting. Ten or fifteen years ago, this light would've been a godsend. It's like a perfectly circular portal of light just appears at the destination, with no spill or glare at all. Which is really cool. But compared to other modern high end LED lights or a zoomable LEP with a green filter on it, it's just not impressive.There are several areas where it's just not as good as other options:1. Most people like a little bit of spill. The harsh 100% brightness to pure darkness boundary with this light is actually annoying to me and to other people I've shown it to. Our eyes really aren't used to that kind of extreme drop off and it feels unnatural. This problem exists with LEP (laser excited phosphor) lights as well, but they're working of fixing that.2. This light is heavy, and terribly front heavy at that. It's awkward to hold out like you're gripping the end of a hammer handle with all that weight pulling down the end that emits light. I'd suggest a counterweight, but that would make it so heavy that it'd be impractical to use at all.3. It's just not very bright. If I'm going to be stuck using something with a harsh edge contrast, most LEP lights are MUCH brighter, have a much longer effective range, and work just fine with properly designed color filters.4. I need to focus this thing. Seriously, if I'm trying to spot animals in the dark, needing to twist a focus ring on the body of a poorly balanced and front heavy light on top of finding them within a narrow perfect circle of light with a harsh edge contrast that gives me eye fatigue, it's just way too much work for a light. LED lights don't need to be focused, nor do LEP, nor do Xenon.Ultimately, I think the OD50 is an interesting toy I might someday show to people who are interested in flashlight tech and the progression it's gone though. But I'll be discussing Optical Dynamics and the OD50 as a sidenote, sort of like Sony Betamax. It's really too bad the company didn't release their products back in 2010 or earlier, or they might really have made a splash. But LED has just come so far in the past six or eight years, and soon the new LEP lights are just going to blow this tech out of the water.

Light finally came in , the switch works part time sometimes it half works and you get a dim light , sometimes it half works and you get a flickering light . None of which reach the range that is claimed on the charts . Does it shine out to 200yds ? Yes but I t isn't enough to distinguish what your looking at . Does it have the best defined beam I have ever seen on a flashlight ? Yes and it would be great if it had the range on the claims made . It does not . The white or clear lense may be what they claim but at over twice the price I don't see the value . The lense is the only difference and it should not cost twice as much ....sorry not worth the time definitely not woth the money .
