Question 1

Sounds like the Stihl MS180C is too weak (32cc).  Would it work just for a trial run? What 20" (but not too $$$) saw is recommended?

I have a Stihl MS170 that I use with this mill.  It out performs my Husqvarna 450 Rancher for milling logs. The down side is the Stihl is only a 16" bar and my Husqvarna is 20".  But I usually have to make two passes anyways because the logs I mill are no less than 24" in diameter.  I do wish the mill had longer rails to ride on top of the log.  My rails are too short for the extention ladder I use as a guide for my first cut.

I a saw chain b2ft-64dl .325" .058"/1.5. would it be good for the mill? are there any better choices for this job? where can i find them? thank you

Your chain saw blade needs to be at least 20 inches long. If it"s longer, that"s OK. Your chain saw motor needs to be at least 55 cc. less than that and your motor will fry. When you use a chainsaw you usually cross cut wood in a matter of 1 or 2 minutes running the saw at top speed. When you use the Granberg Mill you are cutting the wood with the grain and running your saw at top speed for up to 1/2 hour. This is why your saw needs to have a bigger engine.

Will this work with a 24" or is there a better choice?

Yes this will work fine with a saw with a 24" bar on it.  It will make cuts through logs up to say 20" diameter.If you have a 24" bar   I would consider getting an alaskan Mill mkIII    in the 30 or 36" range(can be adjusted down to fit your smaller bar length).  This model only clamps to the saw blade at one side.  If you are cutting larger logs then your saw will have more of a tendency to dip out at the tip where the blade is not supported by the mill.You can order new rails and an accessory kit from granberg to convert your Alaskan mill to a MkIII.  Thats what I did when I outgrew this unit.  When i upgraded my mill to a MkIII  I also got a bigger saw to push it..  my ported Stihl 290 worked fine with an 20" bar  but I switched to a Stihl 660 to push a 36"bar longways through that much wood.

I bought this as a gift. Can someone recommend a good chainsaw that will work well with this.

Works well with a Stihl MS251. Most people say you need around 60CC to be happy milling, but if you keep it to softer woods, smaller logs, or go slow, you should be fine with 45-50CC
