Quality option but not the best option for Vitamin C in a oil based solvent
For all those DIY people out there with a predilection for chemistry will hopefully agree with what I’ve learned anecdotally then verified via multiple studies. My conclusion being that the best option for oil based vitamin C is in the form of Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate for many reasons. One being its depth of absorption due to its oil based solubility in comparison to say a water soluble L-Ascorbic acid. However this is a review of Ascorbyl Palmitate which like Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, is fat soluble. The draw back in comparison is that it doesn’t convert into Ascorbic acid in the epithelial cells very well requiring a higher concentration to yield the same results as Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, leading it to be potentially more irritating to the skin resulting in inflammation and although it does have antioxidant benefits it’s potential for damaging the cell membrane when exposed to UVB rays. Ultimately Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate in my mind is a better more potent fat soluble form of vitamin c and penetrate’s the deepest with much higher/deeper rates of absorption and shelf life stability than the Ascorbyl Palmitate with less risk to damage cell membranes ultimately decreasing the irritation often associated with high concentrations of both fat and water soluble forms. The product itself is good quality and it does do a great job in facial serums to help reduce oily skin. Ultimately the question is more than quality product, but rather functionality and with that said I would definitely invest in Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate if one is looking for the best fat soluble form. Also, note that Ascorbyl Palmitate does not directly dissolve in oil and must first be dissolved in something like ethanol for example in order to create a Homogeneous oil based solution.
