The crystal is made of synthetic sapphire, and is very scratch resistant. Usually, only items that are harder can scratch a softer material, Sapphire has a relative hardness of 9 on the MOHS scale. A diamond can scratch sapphire, but very few other materials are hard enough to do damage.
