It has strengths, but also design issues
I bought this for my turtle tank and have been using it for a few weeks now (not continuously, just as needed). It does a pretty good job of skimming off the various junk (skin, feces, food waste) that accumulates quickly on the surface of a turtle tank. But here are my issues with it:It is hard to clean. The top portions are removable with some fiddling, and these are pretty straightforward to clean once you have them off. The middle portion is supposed to detach from the base, but I have tried repeatedly and it's attached so firmly it feels practically glued in place. So, we're having to settle for partial cleaning only. It needs to be cleaned about every other day to function well.In order to remove even the top sections, you usually have to remove the skimmer from the tank to fiddle with it. This means YANKING off its three strong suction cups. These are not permanently attached to the device, so more often than not, one or more get left behind on the tank, and then need to be pried off and reattached in the holes on the back when returning it to the tank. The only way I could imagine managing to clean the whole thing is by undoing your cord setup, carrying the whole skimmer to a sink, and using a screwdriver to pry the middle segment off of its base. (I haven't tried this yet, since undoing and redoing a cord set-up is troublesome.)It would be so much easier if the sections of this were cylindrical and used a screw thread to hold them together, and if the device and suction cups were configured in such a way that you didn't need to pull everything apart and out of the tank every time you need to clean it (again, I'm finding this to be at least every other day).I would not leave this running constantly; it makes a low-pitched hum which I find annoying, and it would suck up any food still on the surface. But there's no off/on switch, so you'll be unplugging and replugging it every time you use it.If this were a $20 item, these issues would be understandable. But it's not cheap. I want to love it, but at this point, I can't really do more than acknowledge that it performs a useful function.

Fantastic addition to a turtle tank!
I purchased this to skim the surface of a turtle tank. Turtle tanks are typically quite dirty and must be cleaned frequently. My 20+ yr old girl recently suffered a near fatal injury, so after recovering 3 weeks out of water started shedding skin heavily once she was back in her tank full time. So much skin and pieces floating on the surface it looked very scummy all the time. I bought this Eheim 350 skimmer after much research and I think it is without a doubt the best money I've spent on her yet!For such a little unit it has amazing power (turbulence) in the water and the skimmer works fantastic - a 4 ft long tank surface was cleaned up within 20-30 mins. It operates very quietly most of the time, there is something that makes the skimmer stick some times and then it can gurgle and make a little noise but easily fixed by nudging the skimmer piece. Probably all that skin making it stick, cleaning filter reduces the frequency of that too! It is very easy to clean by pulling an exterior piece off and removing the coarse filter inside for rinsing. The skimmer float itself has about 3 inches of height on it so it can be installed at a level to keep it operating well without having to stay on top of the water level. When first installed it was so turbulent (in 55 gallons, 4 ft long tank) debris from the bottom was being stirred up but this is a good thing in a turtle tank so it got sucked up by the skimmer and/or the cannister filter intake. So it's not only keeping the surface clean but my bare tank bottom is much cleaner as well. The photo of the skimmer I attached was taken within minutes of it running so that is why the water is murky. Within 30 minutes it was all good. The turbulence and air bubbles produced were also enough to keep the tank fairly clear when I had to unplug the cannister filter pump for almost 24 hrs. I was shocked and if you know turtles you understand why. No water creature fouls water faster than a turtle I swear!I've had it installed a for a few weeks now and I only plug it in every few days now as it isn't necessary to run 24/7. It no longer clouds up the water due to stirring up bottom debris when I run it, since there is hardly any there. My turtle is quite inquisitive and always checks over everything new in her space and she didn't wait long to check this over either. She likes air bubbles so she'll park in front of it and let it shoot in her face and every once in a while she takes a nip at it but she can't harm it or herself so that's another bonus.I highly recommend this for turtle tanks, I'm certain it would be a benefit for large turtles and tanks particularly but in small tanks or with small turtles/fish I could see it giving problems as some have noted in other reviews. I love it, I'm no longer embarrassed to have the tank sitting in my living room since it doesn't look scummy and water is crystal clear now, always!

A must for planted tank
More of a surface "filter" then a true skimmer, this will remove floating debris from your tank before it has a chance to settle. For a planted tank this avoids buildup on leaves which cuts their ability to photosynthesize. It does an incredibly effective job. I also find the trickling sound quite pleasant. For a marine tank this isn't the right skimmer to get. It doesn't have enough churn to precipitate proteins & it creates microbubbles which further cuts down on effectiveness. For a planted tank, this is perfect. Only minor quibble is that the suction cups are tough to get on (get one corner in the twist & turn) but easy to get off!

Better than I thought, surprisingly powerful!
Packaging was opened when it arrived. First time thats ever happened to me, but all contents were there and it worked!Bought this to remove scum off my planted tank, and allow better gaseous exchange. Pump is rate 300 l/h, and even on the lowest setting is quite powerful! Had to turn it off after a while as the newts in the tank were not happy about being blown around. Removed 95% of the surface scum on my 30"x12" tank in a half hour though! If you have livestock that don't like high flow, purchase with caution. Use this permanently on tanks over 3ft in length. Less than that, use it temporarily.
