Great poet of the black American experience
I love the poetry of Langston Hughes. What I regret is whoever delivers my orders seems to get the address wrong...a lot.

Amazing
"Hang yourself, poet, in your own words.Otherwise, you are dead,"Langston HughesA worthy follow-up to reading The Big Sea, --- all of Langston Hughes poetry, separated into sections by the dates he wrote them. Some absolute treasures here. Quotable, memorable.I would say more, but I am overwhelmed by his work. His jazz-poems, his unabashed blackness, his voice crying in the wilderness for justice. Poems like The Ne Cabaret Girl, I thought it was Tangiers I wanted, Porter, Aesthete in Harlem, and the unforgettable Advertisement for the Waldorf Astoria, are only a few of the gems you will find here.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this collection as a gift or for yourself.
Langston Hughes had an incredible life. This particular text contains hundreds of poems and stories of different lengths and messages. They caused me to reflect and pause - I thought our generation had done better in civil rights than it obviously has.The events of May 2020 that focused BLM introduced me to the work and lives of poets including Langston Hughes and Lucille Clifton. This pandemic has caused so many of us to spend our time differently. While I have always read a great deal. I had not been a fan of most poets as it was just not meaningful to me.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this collection as a gift or for yourself.John J Hogan

Poetry Defines The Times in a Timeless Way
The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes edited by Arnold Rampersad, Editor, and David Roessel, Associate Editor covers the poetry Langston Hughes wrote during his life. Hughes tackled myriad issues throughout his lifetime without apology. His language, though lyrical, is also often blunt and leaves little to interpretation though it invokes intense imagery at times. I felt a wide range of emotions as I read The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes. The poems depicted a life I'll never life while offering insight into the reality of others in a way that forced me to think about my own existence in the world and how I interact with those around me. Authenticity rings through Hughes's work even when he paints moments that feel a bit fantastical. I took my time reading these poems because many are intense and require thought while others are lighthearted observations on life. I was, at times, surprised at how much punch some of Hughes's shorter works contained. The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes reminded me how important poetry is to the narrative of our lives and history being made around us even in the moments that seem the most ordinary to us.

Poetry at its best
I’m only a few poems in but Langston Hughes was one of a kind! His poems make you feel like you are right there going through whatever situation it was that he was speaking on. This is definitely a great choice

4.5 STARS
LOVE the quality of this book! Exceeded my expectations. It feels heavy and thick, like its made of good quality materials even though its not a hard cover. I'm actually glad its not hard cover, that's how nice it is; and hard cover is usually my preference. I deducted one star because of the slight imperfections at the top (probably due to shipping I'm sure). But its not major. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would.

Wonderful!
What an amazing book. Many years ago before computers had conquered the world I came across a slip of paper used to mark a page in a second hand book on it were written the words. 'Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.' There was no clue as to the poet and try as I might I could not discover its origin. however each year I wrote the words on the opening page of my new diary. Then one day I discovered its was written by Langston Hughes the American poet. I wanted to know more of him, so much more. When I bought this volume it was as though all my birthdays had come at once.If you enjoy poetry you will find this work spellbinding and moving beyond belief. An absolute treasure beckoning you to take a journey of discovery. Library bound it will last through to a future generation a testament to its time and events.

Fantastic collection
I originally encountered Langston Hughes' poems as part of my English degree, but ended up buying this collected edition to read for pleasure at my own pace afterwards. As someone who normally finds it difficult to fully connect with poetry, Hughes' writing has a magical quality; using jazz rhythms and themes of race and inequality set mainly in early 20th century New York; I can honestly say I've thoroughly enjoyed reading them.
