One of the top volumes of the series
A great example of soldiers getting used to a normal and finding out that it's not really normal at all. Such a great sereis.

Overly Long Winded. Little Forward Story Progress
So many potential story beats are setup but ultimately ignored in this story. The Federation's communist second in command guy's plot to capture Tanya is completely absent from this story and seems to be completely forgotten. The Entente Alliance girl, Sue, is briefly mentioned but her story is also immediately dropped. A plan to assassinate General Zettour by Colonel Drake's team is brought up and again this plot goes nowhere. The majority of this light novel is supposed to be Tanya learning about public sentiment towards the war from being back in the rear but even that is barely covered. We instead get extremely long winded conversations filled to bursting with figurative language and way too much repetition. We get it, Tanya is tired and wants peace. Saying it over a dozen times just gets tiresome to read after awhile. There's also numerous contradictions happening throughout the novel. Early on in the story Tanya hears about a potential plan to fake an attack on her own government to snap them out of their warmongering ways. She even hears it from General Rudersdorf himself. Yet near the end of the story when Tanya is saying they need to put pressure on the government to stop the war, suddenly the general won't entertain the idea. WHICH IS IT? Is he considering a military coup or is he for the continued decline of his nation by continuing to attack literally every country around his with no actual forces to do so with? This story really just feels like it's spinning its wheels in place. Afraid to go in a direction and stick with it.

Some naval combat, Some split story threads, and rambling
As the story continues, the imperials forces keep winning battles and losing the war. Supplies grow ever more constrained, and the enemy forces just keep growing. That would make this volume kind of depressing and grim by itself, but the unrealistic and uninformed mental monologues of the main character about economics and philosophy -- which may be an author insert or may be the author trying to show the character's mental breakdown -- make for even drearier reading. Fair enough that this is one way to set the tone and reinforce characterization, but it did make several sub-chapters a real slog to get through. There is a fun section where Tanya's artillery and infantry divisions are split off from the magic officers and "vacation" by doing guard duty in the rear. They come to terms with how they feel about Tanya's leadership compared to working under rather more straitlaced by-the-book rearguard commanders. And there is some interesting naval combat involving some newly developed vehicles. Unfortunately, both sections are far too short compared to the rest of the novel, and I think the author would have been better served by spending more time showing us the battle scenes rather than showing us Tanya's mental deterioration. All that said, I'm invested enough at this point to finish out the series and see how the story wraps back around to what we see in those vignettes from post-war reporters in earlier volumes.

It is volume nine of more Tanya the Evil. What isn't to love? (No spoilers)
MOAR AND MOAR Tanya! Duh.I am not going to mention any plot lines or even hint at spoilers. This series is fantastic. It has such depth and span. Really illustrates the insanity of war. Tanya kicks ass. I would really prefer she was on my side of any war. She tends to kill folks that she fights against. This is more of that. But that is a tiniest scratch on the surface of this magnificent diamond. I highly recommend the entire series.
