Q: What is the difference in mallets?

Steel drums/pans are a family if orchestral instruments and come in different ranges. Depending on the range of your drum/pan you choose the appropriate mallets. The most popular range is the soprano/lead pan, also called a tenor in the islands. For this range you need lead/tenor mallets. The next lower range are double seconds; double second mallets have slightly thicker rubber heads. Next, cello/guitar pans which use cello/guitar mallets with still thicker rubber heads. Bass pans have bass mallets with larger rubber heads usually made from rubber balls.
